: Hitches
BROKER 09-23-2003, 09:52 PM Guys what are you running and what is the scoop on anything new.
Fifth wheel?
Gooseneck?
Reciever?
Just curious to see if anyone runs an airhitch?
Tom L.
Gradyghost 09-23-2003, 10:54 PM Broker I run a Titan V on both my GMC's. The stock hitch came apart at the welds on my 2001. My goosenecks are the Reese 25k with a break point of 60k. My bumber mount trailers weigh around 14k and my gooseneck is sometimes over 20k.
4x4man 09-23-2003, 11:42 PM I run a Reese 20K hitch to tow my 5er. Sure it is over kill for a ~10k 5er, but when we hooked a boat on the back of the 5er, I was glad i had a "spare" 6k left in the hitch rating.

Turbine Doc 09-25-2003, 01:05 AM I'm running a Putnam Lock and Load set up for my 9Ton dovetail gooseneck equipment trailer I occasional pull my backhoe with. It's a neat set up as it's under bed nothing in the bed to get out of the way, the spring loaded ball pops out of a well socket, covered by sealed cap until ready to tow. 30K rated also can be adapted for 5 wheel trailers, check out this site at the time they had best prices on the web. http://www.kwikhitch.com/hitches/5thwheels.htm
tekonsha prodigy brake controller is cat's (a double snakes) easy to hook up & works great another cost leader site at the time I bought 6 mos. ago http://www.truckxpressions.com/truckaccessories/towingaccessories/tekonsha_prodigy.htm (http://www.truckxpressions.com/truckaccessories/towingaccessories/tekonsha_prodigy.htm)
chevmeister 09-25-2003, 10:23 AM anyone use the turnover ball from b&w
http://www.turnoverball.com/
dont have one but like the setup.
Turbine Doc 09-25-2003, 11:00 AM Chevmeister,
Don't have one but went to the site looks similar to the Lock/Load I have above, with the L/L setup you don't turn over the ball it locks & stores in the ball well which is then covered with a o-ring sealed cap that sits flush with the bed. Only negative I see with the turnover is is the ball well socket covered from the elements/ dirt and other gook all truck seem to attract; I do like the capability of changing different towing balls/rigs L/L is only 2 5/16" ball or with adapter 5th wheel capable.
chevman 10-01-2003, 11:40 PM We use the easyrider/reese air hitch

JEBar 10-14-2003, 09:48 AM Have just ordered a Reese Titan V to replace my 3500's OEM receiver. The OEM receiver has developed football shaped holes where the locking pin is inserted and, even thought it is reated it do so, it simply doesn't seem to be heavy enough to tow our 10,000 lb trailer. Does anybody know if we will have to remove the rear bumper to install the Titan?
Jim
FirstDiesel 10-14-2003, 07:11 PM Jim
Let us know how the Titan works out. I've been thinking about it.
Did you buy a new hitch or are you going to use the reducer sleeve??
Gradyghost 10-14-2003, 07:12 PM JEBAR,
If you ordered the correct part number TITAN V you will not have to remove the bumper....It just bolts right in place of the stock.

Gradyghost 10-14-2003, 07:13 PM Jebar if you want pics of the titan hitch that slides into this let me know....I also have the reducer sleeve to use for my smaller hitches...
Gradyghost 10-14-2003, 07:15 PM Broker....here is a pic of my 'remove a ball' system...this is the highest rated gooseneck for a pick up truck.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/remove_a_ball.JPG

I ordered a reducer sleeve. Have way too many hitches to do anything else.

Good to hear! I hope to cut cost by installing it myself. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif Did the electrical plug holder come with your Titan? I have been wondering if I will have to cut the one off of the OEM hitch and attach it to the Titan.... Jim
Gradyghost 10-15-2003, 09:00 PM JEBar,
The Titan V that I have on both trucks comes with a mounting bracket welded onto the receiver. I used the 7 pin electrical wiring harness from my truck and just attached it to the the new receiver.
Heres is a pic of the reducer sleeve AND the big honking 2 1/2" hitch bar from Reese.

HowieE 10-15-2003, 10:43 PM For those of us towing a trailer you might want to take a look under your bumper and see how that OEM receaver is holding up. This is what I found. Cracks in the frame at both ends and the tube starting to pull away from the frame where it go through.
Even though my trailer was below the 10,000 lb. on the OEM receaver I replaced it with a 12,000lb. Pull Ritehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/8A3_hitch_crack.jpg
Gradyghost 10-15-2003, 11:06 PM Nice pic Howie.....Thats what was happening to mine so I got the Titans. Do you have pics of your PULL RITE?
chevmeister 10-15-2003, 11:13 PM grady what the rating of the remove-a-ball?
Gradyghost 10-16-2003, 12:49 AM Chevmeister,
Posted rating is 30ooolbs gross trailer weight with a pin load(vertical load) of 7500lbs. I read an article where they tested actually break strength for hitches and this one showed 'stress' at 60000lbs.
chevmeister 10-21-2003, 11:31 PM grady the titan V says drilling required???? any truth or use existing holes?? i can and will drill but id rather not.
Gradyghost 10-24-2003, 09:17 PM The Titan is bigger than the stock therefore the hitch mounts further up the frame. So drilling will be required on some trucks.

Mine still hasn't come in at the dealer I am buying it from .... as stated above, would sure prefer to not have to drill but will do so if required .... Jim

Thanks for the pictures ... does the sleve stay in the receiver of does it come out each time you change hitches?
Jim
Gradyghost 10-25-2003, 07:28 PM Oh Yea it comes out....You can see it laying on the ground in the picture.
JEBar 10-26-2003, 08:34 AM Gradyghost...
does lining up the pin holes in the reciever, sleeve, and hitch present any problems?
Jim
Gradyghost 10-27-2003, 08:14 PM No problems JEBar...your gonna love this hitch setup....It is so darn heavy duty and rugged. I think all trucks should have this on it.

Understood and really glad to hear it http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif .... hopefully mine will be in by the end of this week and I can get it on over the weekend ... Jim
2K2AD 10-28-2003, 04:27 PM Tom,
There are a couple of folks on the Page running the UNAGOOSE. It's rated at or a little better than the REESE. Nice looking hitch and those that run them love them. Here's the link: http://www.unagoose.com/specs.html

Gradyghost 10-29-2003, 05:11 PM JEBar,
Lemme know if you have any questions during install...
JEBar 10-29-2003, 07:15 PM Gradyghost
Picked up Titan V today and man-oh-man were you ever understating it when you wrote of how big/heavy this thing is! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Have read the instructions and most of the drilling mentioned is if I have 6 foot bed and fortunately, mine is a long bed.
Have found the following directions to be interesting: "The 14mm diameter bolts and weld nuts at the end of the frame must be removed. Method 1) Back out the 14mm diameter bolts halfway. Drive the bolt upward by striking the bolt head with a ball peen hammer to break the nut loose." Now there are instructions written for my level of mechanical ability, in short, take a hammer and beat the s**t out of it http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif .
Haven't figured out how to mount the trailer wiring plug ... can see nothing that came with the receiver to use to do so.
The thing is tooooo heavy for me to even attempt to install alone, will have to hold off till I can get at least one of my son's home long enough to help. Thanks for the offer of help... will post when install is completed.
Jim
JEBar 10-30-2003, 04:11 PM Well ... its installed! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif Did it by myself in under two hours, if I was to do another one, would probably take considerably less. It is a hoss!! Ended up cutting the bracket that holds the wiring plug off the old unit and engineering it to fit the Reese ... add a little black spray paint and it actually looks OK ...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Jim
Gradyghost 10-30-2003, 07:22 PM Nice...glad your all done....Make sure bolts are all at correct torque.!!!
DalDMax 10-31-2003, 10:02 AM Got a question for those of you that have the Titan V hitch.
Have you been able to find a locking hitch pin long enough to handle the extra width of the hitch?
I've been looking for a locking hitch pin that is long enough for the extra width and all that I find are barely long enough for a 2" hitch.
Gradyghost 10-31-2003, 04:27 PM Ha HA HA
If you get the 2 1/2 inch hitch it comes with the bolt...otherwise...just order it from reese!
FWIW:
I have been very happy with the B&W Turnover Ball and Companion fifth adapter except in one area. The fifth adapter feet have dimpled the bed in my old truck, both fore and aft, where they put the most stress down. They shipped me 2 delrin slats to go under the adapter in the low area. The Jury is still out on that. They are upgrading the Comapnion and a slightly bigger base is due out this Spring.

speedracer 11-14-2003, 09:53 PM I have the 20,000 lb Superglide 5th wheel hitch in my truck. So far it has worked as advertised. Adjusts automatically, never worry about smashing my cab. Only problem, the bloody thing is heavy, lifting it in and out is a nutt buster, getting ready to rig up a pulley in the garage. After looking at the cracks in the OEM hitch on this thread, thinking of upgrading this soon.
