Yes you can ... Approx a pint of fluid lose ...


Don't forget the ring magnet ,clean and reuse ...

Background---changed from OEM to Allison filter and Transyn ATF at 80000KM(approx 4800 miles).This was first time tranny was touched.Have about 5000 miles on since this change.Gearing up for an Alaska trip early in May and was wonderin if i shud change filter again before leaving.ATF shud be ok as i don't tow or haul excess weight.

External filter change is recomended at 25,000 after initial change at 5,000 miles ...


I change mine at 10,000 nontheless because it's cheap insurance at $8 dollars a filter ...


This would be a personal preferance choice ...


Warming up the tranny will have no effect on changing the filter ... I would use the same fluid although if regular Dex III was all that was handy would be ok too ...

I change the tranny spin on/off filter every time I change the oil. (about 5,000 miles) At just over $8 each, it is a cheap way to help save bigger bucks down the road. I also change the fluid and do a complete transmission flush every 25,000 miles or so. That comes up to less then $150 every 25,000 miles (Or about every 8-9 months for my mileage) At the local Allison dealer/shop the filters are $8.17 each when purchased in lots of 6, and their good juice is $115 for 4 gallon. The first time I bought 5 gallon, but 4 is enough. The extra gallon is for many filter changes. (16 or so)

I'd stick with transynd if you can... Agree with mac on the interval. That sounds reasonable and is what I am on track to do. You should be fine without a new load of oil. If you have transynd in there, you will be good for 100,000 miles according to Allison. I will probably change (no flush this time) at 50,000 just because I like fresh stuff well maintained...

Does transyn have a better coefficient of friction than regular dex III? I remember a couple of guys being able to hold say a 125 juice with the standard (factory) fluid and then limped the trans when it was changed to transyn. What happened here?


When I rebuilt my TH350 trans for racing I used Type F because it has a far supperior coeff. of fric. (Cf) relative to dex II at that time. Of course the higher the Cf the better the clutches can grab. Similar to the additives used in limited slip(clutch type) differential carriers. The only draw back was that type F caused seals to shrink while dex II caused them to swell. If anyone has a link to the chemical properties of transyn I would appreciate it. I am going to do some searching now. Oh just for reference, all of the front dump concrete mixers we recieve at work, have allison trannies and transyn stickers on all the cases.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

That was a change to Amsoil tranny fluid .....
I haven't a clue on the friction additives in the new Amsoil fluid, Torque Drive tho .... Ask Gregg

Is the amsoil torque drive good to use instead of the transdyn? Where can you get the filters for the trans internal and external? Local only at the chevy dealer and they are about 70.00 for both. I thought that was a little high. What kind of power will just useing the transgo kit handle?

You don`t need to change the internal screen unless you are changing to the deep pan. And I believe it was about $28 for that and $46 for the pan.


Don`t purchase from the GM dealer unless you have lots of extra money you need to burn. And in that case, you can e-mail me for directions on how best to get rid of it.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I picked up the Mag-Hytech deep trans pan and rear diff covers in a package deal from xtremediesel (save 10% when buying both together). I'll tackle the rear diff as soon as it gets here and refill with Redline 75-90W.


I plan to replace my spin-on Ali filter that day, too (I've got ~6,000 miles). Here's my diemna: I'm anxious to throw the Mag-Hytech tranny pan on, too (with Alison deep filter). But at 6,000 miles, I feel like this would be a waste to do it now (new fluid, labor, etc.).


Do you think I should just go for it and not worry about another fluid change for 25,000 miles, or just change my spin-on right now and wait to install the Mag-Hytech pan until I have 25,000 miles?


I realize this is a pretty subjective question, so I'm just looking for wise opinions. Thanks in advance.

Provided you can save the fluid in a clean container you could reuse it ...


With a drain and refill no flush it's Fluid Capacity (Approximate):
Deep Pan: 15 qts: Shallow Pan: 13 qts.Dextron III ...

I had a Mag-Hytec Pan for better then a month waiting for warmer weather to install ... I have Approx 5000 on fresh Mobil Dino and will switch to Transynd when I install in a few weeks ....


IIRC I switched over to Transynd at 10k and deep pan stock tranny ....


Would it be a waste of fluid for you ?? Sure the Dino is still good ... Like I said if you can recover ,like when my tranny temp gauge was installed,without contamination reuse ......


Line a funnel with a paint filter (auto parts store) when putting into a sutable container to pour into the dipstick tube ...


When you decide to flush just drain the Mag-hytec ,refill,pull the from cooler line (top upper line) and pump out a gallon and a half at min .... I over fill my tranny buy about 3/4 of a gallon based on capacity above .... Pump out a gallon add a couple quarts finish flush .... Install line and start checking and topping off running truck thru the gears while brake is applied ...
