I have an D/A with a birthdate of 12/10/01. I am coming
up on my 36,000 mark. The truck has never been to the
dealer and I wonder if there have been any upgrades on the Tranny that I should have done.

Mac, didn't you want to say "Suncoast Level V"? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
That would be a good upgrade...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Take it in. Last update for the TCM was I think August of 2003.

My truck as built in Late Oct, 2001 (a 2002 model). The major update to the TCM software was done in the Feb 2002 timeframe. They added the capability for OD lockout and fixed some of the shift busyness problems. If you want the OD lockout feature, you also need to convince them to update the ECM programming. I have recently had both ECM/TCM software updated. Always good to get the latest updates installed (anyone who develops software would understand whyhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif). No change in engine performance, transmission seemed to hold 5th gear a little longer when pulling trailer.

Those of you guys with the '01 Duramax have inferior bushings at the stator support and pilot bushing at the mainshaft to input shaft. The updated bushing in the staor support is Teflon coated, and the pilot bushing at the main shaft is brass instead of babbit. These bushings will come back to haunt you. I also think the rubber in the apply pistons is inferior, that is why Allison says never use them over again.

My 2001 is sheduled for a transmission up date monday morning at the local GM dealer. I have noticed the hard down shifting since new.
Warranty runs out in eight months so thought its time to get it done.
The technician says GM doesnt like to do up dates unless there is a code show up. This is my fourth new diesel from this dealer they treat me very good and wiil approve any reasonable request that I ask for.

There was a tech bulletin on how to retrofit a lockout on the 01 and 02 models. It was at:
http://service.gm.com/techlink/html_en/pdf/200207-en.pdf#dst15
But now it is gone????
What is the dealer typically charging to add this lockout feature?
Thanks Edited by: 56Nomad

Howard,
The dealer wanted to charge me about $350 if I remember correctly.
You can do the wiring and gathering parts yourself. What you cannot do is the updates to the TCM/ECM programs. You need to convince the dealer there is an issue with your truck to get them to do it for free (and in my case, there was an issue with the harsh 2-1 downshift on hills)
Reference this thread this posts. Read the entire post

There is a document that I posted there that describes the changes made to the TCM program. There is also some words in the document that can be used to mentioned at the dealer to increase your chances of them updating the TCM/ECM programs.
The actual switch install is reference here:

Hi Allan and all,
I just got back from two weeks in the desert...... Jawbone CA
area. Anyway, the dealer service manager called and left a message
on the answser machine. The parts are in!
Before we left, I brought the truck in for an upgrade on the tranny,
but in order to get the lastest tranny upgrade, I needed to have the
OD lockout switch installed.
Since this is the dealer's first OD lockout switch install I thought
I’d do some homework for them. On John Kennedy’s website he
put the installation instuctions which are different and more detailed
than the GM instructions:
http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=753&KW=allison
At JK's website http://www.kennedydiesel.com, the author of these
detailed intructions is MITTIE M. DRAGOSLJVICH
and he has photos too!
BUT.........in Mittie's intructions he writes..........*
<font color="red">"Caution should be used whenever turning ON or OFF the Over Drive
Lock Out (ODLO) feature to prevent unexpected transmission shifting
that could lead to loss of vehicle control resulting in an accident, property
damage, serious injury or death."</font>
Death is not mentioned in the GM's instructions!
Whoa......... who is Mittie?? and why does he know more than GM! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif
