I'm going to seriously look at a 2001 tomorrow with 41k miles on it. I've stopped and given it a thorough visual once over and it generall looks like it wasn't abused and was well taken care of. If the work history regarding injectors comes back clean (or not), what is the consensus on having problems with the injector system? Unfortuanately, I can't afford anything newer than an 01, so the question is do I find a good 01, or get a big block gas chev, or get a Dodge diesel. I don't plan on doing any mods and am looking for a reliable tow vehicle. Thanks in advance.

With only 41K on it, you still have plenty of comfort room on warranty, if you do have injector trouble, they are a warranty item also.

Injectors are covered under the factory 100,000 mile warranty on the '01's.

I know... They just replaced all 8 of mine at 60,000 miles.

If the trucks have had the injectors changed according to TSB 04-06-04-007, any dealer will know.... they are tied to the vin #.

Other than the injectors.... I have not had any other problems.

Hope this info helps with your decision.

Blinky,

Do you have a copy of that TSB or know where I can get it? I also have an 01...

Why not have someone run the VIN and see if the truck you want to buy has a service record and what was done? Its possible that the injectors may have already been replaced and that would be a good thing...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Iv'e got an '01(2WD/EC/LWB) with 56,000 miles (bought in Sept. 02 with 17K miles for $23,900) Runs great, gets apx 20mpg combined rural/urban and has less than +/- 2 on all injectors on a tech II balance test. Guess I got a good set. I run premium Shell diesel almost all the time(RotellaDFA occasionlally). Change the OE filter every 10K and am still putting off secodary filtration (I know, need to get off my butt and put on a prefilter). I considered buying a new higher option one with the LLY with the good financing/sale deals lately, but since this one is more than half paid for....I think I'll hang on to it. I figure I've got 44K miles left for a "failure" and a new set of 8 injectors. Like everone else says...get warranty/repair history and maybe do a Carfax report on any perspective purchase. Mine was a one owner with a driving light bulb being the only repair(previous owner) ever taken to the dealer for. I have the steering shaft pop and a slight idle fluctuation in very cold engine/ambient temp. I bought GMPP to 100K to cover everything other than engine/systems but have never had it in...do all my own maint.

Good Luck...Andy

I have any '01 and no problems so far. I've had it almost 2 years and just 21k miles on it. At that rate the 5 years will be up first.

I have an 02, built in 12-01, I don't think they had made any improvements to the injectors buy then. 18,000 miles and not a single problem with anything. I use Stanadyne Performance and just installed one of Nick's Cat pre OEM fuel filters. No mods, runs great, and tons of power. I still think the overall number of injector failures is relatively low compared to the actual number of trucks on the road.

If it's in good shape buy it!

Thanks a lot. Based on all the people I know who have 01's this seems to jive. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif My current Ford has been such a nightmare, that I'm a little gun shy. This one is at a Chevy stealer and is Certified used, for whatever that is worth. I will check all the things you guys have mentioned. Thanks for the info.

pinetree...i bought my baby in mid-feb this year...it had almost 39k on it...VERY clean and nice...ran like a top...

had the 40k service done at a $stealer...BIG mistake...a local gmc truck only dealership with a BIG shop got everything straightened out...all 8 injectors had to be replaced...runs as well as ever now, and hauls my 18' 4-horse stock trailer like an elephant!

HOWEVER, the shop foreman at the gmc shop pulled a warranty list...it is SIX pages long!...i essentially have a new truck http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif ...i like the truck SO much, i think if i had know it's history, i wud have bought it anyway...EVERYONE likes it a lot!

i agree that altho there IS an injector problem, it's small compared to the number of dmaxes on the road...AND, the mech that replaced my injectors stated that they are VERy reliable, and he's had none come back...

unless it's been in a major accident, or had GOBS of warranty work done...BUY IT!...i don't think u'll have any regrets...

I bought a 2001 with 60,000 miles in Nov. I'm very happy with it. I am in the same boat, buy used save $$$. I ran a carfax report and a member here ran the VIN for me it has not had any trouble (other than a radio that went out and was replaced). I did buy a extended warranty with it (I have on every used car I've ever bought) just in case. It runs great, I have added some things, Most importantly a pre-filter. I've got a appointment to get all computers flash updated next week.

I would do it all over again in a heart beat.

I bought a late model '01 with the hope of most '01 model year fixes made production. Haven't had a single problem yet.

Ya know...... I was hummin' along thinkin' everything was great. Thought that the injector problems I kept reading about here were rare. Then................

whammmmmmo...... SES at 60,000 miles...

Now I have 8 new injectors....

This is supposedly common with the '01's. Just ask Dmaxallitech....

Thank goodness for the factory warranty and a reputable dealer.

Still, I wouldn't trade my truck for another....

IMHO, If you can find an '01 in good shape with low miles at a good price, I would not hesitate...... Buy it. You won't be dissapointed.

Look for signs of a power box. Does it have gauges? Is there a hole in the exhaust manifold where a pyrometer was?

Thanks a lot guys. Trying to get someone on the tech board to run the vin for me. Stealer is being very, very stingy on this truck. I am going to think on it for a while. Hopefully they will see the light and come down some more. After quite a negotiation, (four trips to see "the manager") I have them giving me the lowest trade number possible on mine, (they started out $3000 below trade-in book) and they have come down $400 on thiers. Not a good deal at this point. Its a decent pickup in pretty average shape, not perfect by any stretch, so I think I'll hold out a little. Thanks again. And oh, by the way, after driving one of these duramax/allis I'm definately buying one over the Dodge. I can't believe how much better these things are overall than my 99 F-250 superduty.

They should have lots of room to move since someone probably traded it in for a big loss.

Hey if you dont mind, comparing the two, and what you found or is better on the d-max over the powerstorker, i looked around in swap sheet across two states, and found very few d-max,and none i could afford, but found a few nice lookin 99-01 pstrokers somewhat in my range......Thanks.-Adam

Polarbear,

I'd be glad to make a comparison. First of all, I'll say that I'm a lifer chevy guy and this was my first/last Ford product. I thought at the time (2001) that the Ford was the logical choice. I didn't really like the truck that comes wrapped around the Cummins, and I was having such a hard time trying to sell or trade my 92 6.5 that I didn't want to get another one of those.

From the beginning I didn't like the way the ford rode, or handled. Steering is loose and they wander some. They ride stiff as he!!, to the point you can't drink your coffee and drive on most of the roads around here (W. Montana). You can't get one with an auto tranny that is expected to hold up for any length of time towing heavy loads, so I got the six speed, which is fine, but you have to shift. The Dmax rides like a car compared to my ford. It is slightly more powerful, and the Allison seems to work like velvet. The Ford is bigger and roomier inside, which I did like. The back seat of the extended cab really sucks compared to the chevy though. In my mind the biggest plus for the Chevy is cab noise, esp at highway speed. It pained me greatly to drive home today after driving that Chevy. Man they are smooth and quiet!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Here's the real reason I am getting rid of my Ford though. The engine has many issues. They seem engineering related, and some are pretty serious. Mine injested enough dust through the lousy factory air intake to destroy the engine at 40,000 miles. Ford wouldn't stand behind it and it took months to get the Dispute Settlement Board to ante up. They also run the crankcase vent through the intercooler/turbo coating everything with oil and making hoses pop off under load. Some of them have serious fuel delivery problems, (Cackle, they call it). Read about them on www.dieselstop.com (http://www.dieselstop.com) many many good topics in the 7.3 engine and drivetrain forum. Search, Dusting, Cackle, Tank mods, etc. Now the replacement engine leaks oil from a new place almost weekly. Lots of them leak, too. Another good search topic.

I'm not on here to Bash Fords though. This is just my story and it isn't necessarily indicitive of the rest of the worlds view, so please, no flames. I bought this truck with an open mind, now its closed again. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Thanks for typin that up. Ill agree 110% on the ride factor. My dad has a 97 250 p-stroker 2wd reg cab and uncle has a 02 350 p-s 4wd reg cab, and they both ride very harsh, overly stiff i guess youd say. Which is perfect, if your constantly driing in 6" potholes i guess. But when i stepping in a 03duramax for a ride, i couldnt believe it. I thought i was in a god damn cadillac. I just couldnt/cant get over that. I punched it and the power was there and waiting. Also, inside the cab found it quieter than a storker, but still loud enough that you know you got DIESEL! Cant comment on ford rear seat/ext cab, but i felt kinda cramped in both our p/s reg, and im not big at all 6'2 160lbs.The duramax i drove was ext cab, and i found to be very roomy and comfortable, nice rear seat. Im a big fan of chevy interior design, not raw and blah as fords. granted i want something rugged and durable for on the farm, but i want it nice to...Either way, the more time i spend thinkin about it, the more i feel a duramax is in my near future...only problem is i cant find any for sale well that i can afford...Thanks again-Adam
