I have a 2002 Duramax that I just ordered a new Alpine cd/receiver with a built in XM receiver. I would like to replace the standard speakers with something better, but don't know much about sound systems. I need some imput on what would be a good replacement and if I should just replace the speakers or add a component speaker system. I don't plan on adding an amp.
Thanks in advance.

Tom,
For some ideas, you may want to check www.crutchfield.com (http://www.crutchfield.com) .
You can click on the link "What fits my vehicle?" You then input your vehicle and options and it will bring up speakers that fit. If you purchase the speakers from them, they will also send you the adapters required to hook them to your factory wiring. I haven't purchased anything from them in quite a few years, but I do use their site to show people their options as to what will fit. I am going to install Polk db675's in all the doors of my truck, but I am also installing amps and a sub. There are a few other sites out there that will show you what fits, but that is the only one that comes to mind right now. You may also want to check out posts by BlueOx03 as he would be able to point you in the right direction for speakers as well. JL Audio makes some great speakers, but I can get a great deal on the Polk's from one of my old suppliers, so I went with them.
On edit: I know you don't plan on adding an amp, but IMO, you really need an amp to get the best sound out of high end speakers. Most head units are grossly underpowered. I have never dealt with the alpine's though, so they may be different.Edited by: flhrciblueice

I Had infinity's in my Jeep and they were great. I may upgrade my speakers soon. Didn't order the Bose because I wanted a bench rather than buckets. Not a fan of Bose either.

I have spent thousands of dollars at this store. I can't remember what speakers they were that I put in my truck but I know the first ones that I bought wouldn't work in the rear doors. The magnet on the back side of the speaker stuck out so far that the window hit it whenever you rolled it down. The stock stereo and speakers in these trucks is actually so bad if you get Wal-mart audio it's going to be a huge improvement.

In my last truck I had Infinity Kappa series speakers and I was very impressed with them. I recently ordered 2 pair of Infinity Reference series for my Dmax. They are not as pricey and hopefully close to the same quality. You can order a 6.5 inch component system which will be more expensive but produce better sound due to the crossover and separate tweeter that is included. Or you can order the 6.5 inch coaxial type and they even make them set up for shallow mounting depth. If you get 6.5 inch as opposed to 5.25 inch they will mount just perfect except they may be too deep and conflict with the window when it gets rolled down. In that case you may have to improvise some kind of spacer to make them work. --SS
