: Do I need a scanner?

Being new to Diesels, I really enjoy reading the info on this board. I am learning as I go. I do not plan on modifications to my 2005 LLY truck just yet, but I probably will later. Right now if my check engine light came on, I would probably take it to the dealer. I want to learn how to do this stuff myself. What is the best way to find out what is going on when the check engine light or any other warning light comes on? How do you troubleshoot these new vehicles?

What equipment do I need to own that will enable me to troubleshoot my 2005 LLY Duramax.

Thanks...

I would definitely suggest a scanner. Make sure it includes Duramax specific codes. Also consider a used programmer, like the Predator, as a cheap alternative with a few extras. A fuel filter gauge is a nice tool also.

Whats the chance of getting a scanner that can read codes in my Duramax and my 1998 Trans Am?

I think most of them will do both. I know Actron has a kit that they say will do all. Also consider researching a PC based system if you have a laptop. A ton more stuff normally included with them.

What about a book to learn this stuff, any suggestions?

Reading injector rates is a must also.

My Predator 2.02 for my 05 Duramax will read and clear codes on my 1997 Chevrolet Suburban, Saturn, and any GM vehicle that is OBII. That starts about 1996 I think.
