I am new to the Allison 1000.Is it a 6 speed or a 5 speed?

It is a 5 spd for sure - with a provision for another gear - I think.

In a related issue, I never understood the so called Ally "excess shifting" criticism from the other diesel camps. The Ally 1000 has an extra gear to be used, so it has more flexibility than a 4 speed auto and so it keeps the RPMs in the power band better. From a fuel efficiency perspective isn't that exactly what you want a 5 or 6 speed auto tranny to do?

The older Dodge Cummins with the 47RE was in 3rd gear by 9mph. Talk about being in the wrong gear all the timehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
