Can anybody give me any movies or clips, something to tell me kinda what a Duramax with any straight pipe sounds like. 3 1/2 inch to 6inch doesnt matter I wanna know if it sounds better than a Powerstroke. I don't want that farting noise when it's driving down the road,I need DEEP growl from a Chevy Diesel. Thank's Adam

If you buy a Ford I will drive to Monroeville and stick a 6" exhaust up your you know what! Just joking.

I have the bully dog 4" exhaust, I turned the muffler around the other day to cut back on the cab noise, so now the gas just passes over the fins in the muffler, quiter in the cab and not much louder outside, it still has that low tone outside. I have some friends with stock systems straight piped and they don't sound bad I just like the deeper sound of the 4" with the 6" tiphttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

When I get mine I will eventually put a straight pipe on it. I know it will void the warranty won't it? I will get a brand new truck so I'll wait a little while( like a few months) to take the muffler off. I am trying to find what the deepest less powerjoke sound there is. Do the dealers bother you to much if you take the muffler and cat off or do you put it back whan you have to take it there?

The dealer doesn't bother me at all about mine. I called and talked to the service manager before I did it, he said as long as you don't mess with any sensors on the exhaust you can do whatever you want.

Nice! I'm just going to have to buy my truck from a good dealer around the area. My friend has a Cummins with 5" straight pipe and the dealer he bought his off of said it's o.k .

My Ford sounded alot better because of the whistle..the dmax grumbles more when loaded..sounjds alot bigger than a 6.6, gets a little flatulant above 2500, but not that offensive ish.

Does it sound anyway like a Furd? I don't want wussy solid whistling out the pipe. I want deep roaring from Duramax, My friend has a Powerjoke and that thing sounds like s%$*. He has an aftermarket muffler on it and that made it worse. Fart Fart Fart down the road. I know somebody has something, That powerjoke has an automatic high idle or something and all it does is Whistles louder. Need Roar. Not a drone like cummins either or at least I hope not, I'm kinda geting tired of listening to my neighbors 6" stack drone.

My ford roared..he must have something wrong with his powerstroke, have you owned a powerstroke? Let's try and refrain from calling them a a powerjoke..they have a pretty decent track record...this site is better than that. Edited by: Wickedsprint

Z71 Grizzly,

Can't respond on our competitiors sound wise but we get responses from our customers all the time that our system has a nice deep growl type tone to it. Our T-409 systems include a T-304 muffler with 4 inches of ceramic blanket and stainless steel wool packing material, you also get 4 options on tips as well.

I did it last week, and its amazing. Its not obnoxious or unrefined sounding like when you do it to a gas motor. You can keep it civil by being easy with the throttle, but when you nail it.....

A duramax sounds a lot different. I know what ya mean by the farting sound in OverDrive. A duramax does not sound like that in OD when crusing. It is a lot smoother. I had strait pipe, then went to 4" strait pipe, they sound about the same to me.

I figured out that I'll get a used truck when I get a Dmax but I still havent heard a true Duramax sound yet though. Anybody have some clips?

I havent heard a Duramax straightpiped, but I've seen a 6.0L PSD with 5" straight from the turbo exiting at about the middle of the bed and it sounded AWESOME! Like a freakin' jet fighter http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

My LLY with my complete dynomax setup has serious turbo whistle, I love it. Not to sure if I would like the straight pipe setup, but thats just me.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Where's JK's at Ratlover? My birthday is this weekend and it's a busy weekend too with all these graduation partys to go too,two this weekend. If it sounds like a 350 with glasspacks it probably has serious cackling to it like 350's do. I don't know I'll hear the Roaring power of the right trucks sometime.

just finished doing mine and i don't think is that loud definitely not cackly. it sounds like a lot of air flowing through a hollow pipehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif with a little bit of throaty rumble. i did the dynomax pipe to rid of the cat and a piece of 4" for the muffler. i used to have a set of supertrapps on my old bronco with a 460 and this isn't even close to being as loud as the bronco was. i say just do it you will like it.

edit: i could hear the turbo better with just the muffler gone, before i put in the pipe for the cat. now i can't hardly hear the turbo at all.Edited by: rocksam

I put on a set of MBRP Cool Duals on mine. I scrapped the cat and went with the system from the turbo back. I think the muffler on the dual setup is smaller than on the single system.

Lots more turbo whistle. Great deep sound. You control the volume with your right foot.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Take a look in the get together forum for John Kennedy's openhouse.

Mine definatly hasn no cackel, even when decellerating. It does kinda have a "cow pissing on a flat rock" sputtering kinda sound but that is evident with even exhaust.

The LB7's dont have much turbo whine, supposedly the LLY's are much more noticable. The fords really wistle though. I wish mine had more whine. Sound is very subjective though....

Is it legal to remove the cat on the exhaust? I thought on the gassers that they needed the cat for some sort of sensor. I am asking a silly question I know because everyone here seems to have gotten rid of the cat anyways.

ratlover
06-15-2004, 11:30 AM
Its not legal but most places you can get away with it. The LB7's(like you have) run fine without cats. The LLY's it seems the jury is still out. There are no O2 sensors that are "watching" the cat(this is what throws the code on a gasser) on the duramax.

blnagel

So if these cats are removed it wont throw any codes? Can I get into trouble if I removed the cats or will most shops install the pipes and remove the cats or make you keep them on? I am unable to install them since I would not know what to do. Are they easy to install? I am reading that from the turbo back is the way to go? Is that correct?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

If you buy a complete system it will eliminate the cat and its actualy a very easy job mechanicly and can be acomplished with regular hand tools. The only hard part or time consuming part is "wrestling" the old out. It takes some snaking and I believe it was much easier with the back of the truck on jack stands. Some exhaust systems also require cuting the pipe before the muffler depending on what cab configuration you have. A quick call to the vender would aswer that one though. I bought my system from JK and was happy with the directions/fit except it didnt say anything about needing to trim the middle peice. I wanted to make sure i got the right system so a quick call to John and he set me straight. Went on really easy. Squirting the rubber hangers with some lube helps slide em off too.

If you are going to yank the cat and muffler but leave the rest of the system stock then you will need someone to weld in some peices(I think people say they spen about 60$ for the shop to yank the muff and replace with straight)

It is illegal for the shop to yank a cat. Alot of shops wont do it but if you can find one or know of someone they will look the other way. $ under the table ussualy helps toohttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif

Or maybe try to lure a fellow Dmaxer over to give you a hand if you are tad bit uncomfortable doing it yourself. I know most guys here are helpfull and will lend a hand for some brews, pizza, and the chance to BS with each other. Montana is a bit of a road trip for me otherwise I would offerhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

06-15-2004, 12:07 PM
Oh, and if your truck has a cat it wont throw codes since its a LB7.

06-15-2004, 12:15 PM
Thanks for the offer. So if the cat was removed no codes will flip up? The truck would run good? or better should be the question? Is Banks a good brand or what is JK? Thanks alot!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Banks has good stuff. They are all good and each has their own selling point. JK is John Kennedy, he has Kennedy Diesel and he sells his own exhaust IIRC....

yOU MAY NOTICE A VERY SLIGHT INCRESE IN SPOOL UP OF THE TURBO.....MEANING IF YOU TROMP ON IT FROM A DEAD STOP IT WILL START TO PICK UP A TAD QUICKER. nO DIFFERENCE IN ACTUAL PEAK PERFORMANCE THOUGH. wERE A AFTERMARKET HEXHAUST OR OTHERWISE REDUCING RESTRICTION HELPS IS BY LOWERING egt'S. Stupid caps lockhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif I type to slow to fix ithttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif........

Anywho......you run a less restrictive exhaust so you can run a bigger tune and it wont run as hot as it would with stock exhaust.

Scotty Seelen
06-15-2004, 04:38 PM
Are you sure there's no difference in peak performance? It's just that Banks exhaust claims up to +18hp and +30tq on their system. Either way, I like the sound.

Pretty sure people have dynoed the stuff and saw little to no gain. Just like intakes, I think has been shown that there isnt much if any gain to be had.

I noticed no difference with SOP feel except in noise and maybe a slight improvement in spool up time, maybe.

30# of torque sounds optomistic to mehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
