: Running out of Fuel
UAWDIESEL 02-23-2006, 08:36 PM When the Fuel gets low in the Tank the light don't come on and the Truck
quits running . I open bleeder screw in filter head and Prime
until fuel comes out and the Truck will start and run OK . I drive
to station and fill and theres no problem until fuel gets low again.
Anybody got any Ideas on this . Low fuel light or what .??????????:help: :help: :help:
farmdog 02-23-2006, 08:53 PM Low fuel light= start walking:eek: Don't wait for that stupid thing.
JhnZ71 02-23-2006, 11:06 PM You should always start thinking about getting fuel when your at about a 1/4 tank. Thats what i do, i spent an hour the other day helping a woman who ran her Duramax out of gas on the side of the highway.
"So why do I have to pop the hood again"...
growleybear 02-23-2006, 11:33 PM I have had the same problem with my truck. I have had the fuel sending unit in the tank replaced 4 times and it is acting up again. It seems when the sending unit goes out I will run out of fuel when I get down to 1/4 tank.
66flh 02-24-2006, 12:22 AM Try it at 11:00 at night when its 8* outside. It SUCKS.Keep fuel in the tankCensored the gauge and the Censored low fuel light!
1498 TC HET OPERATOR 02-24-2006, 12:37 AM Dear Sir:
I am not sure my opinion will help your situation. I had an air leak in the fuel head assembly. With a full tank of fuel, bleeding any air in the fuel system and parked uphill, my truck will not start til I was on level ground.
Second suggestion: I replaced my stock 38 gallon tank with a 56 gallon Transfer Flow Tank. I lost some payload capacity. Depending on driving conditions, I have about 600-800 mile range.
ajchuck 02-24-2006, 12:55 AM I always fill when I have about 1/4 a tank left. Unless I am running low on cash then I will push it till I can afford it again.
Grey Ghost 02-24-2006, 04:46 AM I go by miles driven rather than depend on the guage. To stay safe and have some cushion, I fill up at or before 350 miles.

alleghenyrose 02-24-2006, 06:03 AM At what point should the low fuel light come on? Is it 1/8th or when showing empty? Please & thankyou.
UAWDIESEL 02-25-2006, 12:01 AM When The Low fuel light came on for the last 82,000 miles I would always have 2.5 or 3 gallons left . When I have this problem I still have 2.5 or 3 gallons left .
growleybear 02-25-2006, 12:42 PM Fueling up acording to miles dirven works fine if you always have the same load. I have found that my milage will vary over 10 MPG depending on load, wind and terrain, so I find the fuel gauge to be very handy and would like it to be accurate.
rtquig 02-25-2006, 04:13 PM I know it sounds crazy, but below 1/2 tank I fuel it up. On the road I'll stretch it to 1/4, but absolutely no lower. During the winter I will even get fuel past 3/4 to keep out the condensation. I drove heavy trucks for 20 years and fueling up every night was a must, still can't break the habit.
Dustdevil 02-25-2006, 07:19 PM First time I ran out, it was 8 miles after the fuel light came on. I tried to stretch it to get to cheaper fuel, but it cost me an hour. I recently found that it won't go even 8 miles any more. Runs out before the light comes on. Maybe a bad light or fuse.
I wouldn't expect the fuel gauge to be a precision instrument under any circumstances. They will vary from truck to truck, each one's a little different. In my case, it varied in the same truck with no changes.
I wouldn't waste too much time trying to get absolutely consistent performance from the factory fuel gauge, or expecting the dealer to swap it out.
Frank Blum 02-25-2006, 11:41 PM I haven't run out of fuel in over forty years and I like it that way. Later! Frank
TheBac 02-25-2006, 11:47 PM IMO, its not a good idea to run that low on fuel in a diesel.

I've heard the same, and don't intend on having it happen again.

Did you tell her to fill it with Diesel next time?

Ditto. Not in over 40 years here as well. :D Have had the light come on a couple times and seem to have three gallons left from there.
brewster29 03-07-2006, 02:13 PM I'll point out obvious: it costs the same to run on the top half of the tank as the bottom half...and no chance of running out of fuel. Waiting for the idiot light is just asking for trouble.
