: Stock reese receiver
Anyone know the rating on the stock reese receiver? I've got a 16,000 gvwr flat deck trailer. Total weight probably wouldn't exceed 10-12,000 lbs. Doesn't look like a very rugged receiver, wondering if I should install a heavier one.
trailerpro 02-22-2006, 09:24 PM 7500 weight carrying, 12000 weight distributing. I have seen them bend with a lot of tongue weight.
high desert 02-23-2006, 02:39 AM I've also seen failures of that hitch. I just upgraded my hitch to a Putnam XDR.
15,000 weight carrying, 1,500 tongue
16,000 weight distributing, 1,600 tongue
What do you use for a ball mount? All the ones I've seen have a max rating of 10,000 lbs. Also thinking of going to a pintal hitch if that gains me anything.
high desert 02-23-2006, 01:36 PM Here are some Putnam ball mounts rated at 15,000 lbs.

WorkTruck 02-23-2006, 02:01 PM Reese makes the stock receiver?, didnt know that. Anyway, I would immediately dump the stock receiver and go with the Reese Titan Tow Beast 2 1/2 inch receiver. This is a super heavy duty hitch that is way stronger than the stock hitch which has had more than a few failures. The Putnam XDR is a step up, but still not as tough as the Titan. About $280 from etrailer.com.

Thanks for the help. By the way - When I refered to the "Reese stock receiver" I was using Reese as a generic term. I have no idea who makes the stock one.
mylilpeterbilt 02-26-2006, 09:04 PM The stock one on mine bent...Wasnt real impressed with it. We have a towbeast on a work truck also because the stocker completely broke off! I built a new one just like the towbeast. I would definately reccomend it.

Yep, it is curious that Putnam rates the XDR as high as it does, when it barely looks tougher than the stock hitch. The Titan Tow Beast is much more stout than either hitch and is what I would go with regardless of the ratings. I have seen both in person and there is no comparison. Plus on lifted and 4x4 trucks where the rear end of the truck is up higher, you need a much stronger hitch anyway because of the extra leverage the trailer puts on the hitch through the bigger drop ballmount. This is where the 2 1/2 inch opening on the Tow Beast really pays off over the 2 inch stuff.
bcserl 02-27-2006, 11:46 AM My stocker doesn't look good. It looks pretty weak and the hole for the pin is already stretched out.
For you guys with the Titan, where/how do you remount the trailer electrical connector?
Gruber 02-27-2006, 01:44 PM I believe the Titan comes with a piece of strap iron welded on it. You then bolt the stock electrical housing on that. That is how mine is.
On another note, they use 2 of the stock bolts that screw into a frame mounted nut. My bolts kept loosening up:mad: so I took one to OSH hdwre and got a couple of nuts to use as jam nuts. Some blue loctite and the jam nuts cured the problem.:ro)

I will have to disagree with you on this. The Putnam XDR is way more stout then the round tube POS that comes stock on these trucks.
As for the 7 pin connector, how do you bolt the original connector bracket to the new hitch when it's welded to the stock hitch?
I fabricated a new bracket and bolted it to the bumper.

Gruber 02-28-2006, 12:19 PM I did not install my hitch but there is probably a 2'' by 5" piece of strap iron welded on the hitch that sticks out. They may have cut off the stock connector leaving enough material to drill a couple of holes and bolt it on to the strap iron or they had a bracket in stock and used that. I got a pretty good deal on it as I recall so I had them put it on while I was at work. That left the weekend to play:ro)

GDZLAM 03-03-2006, 03:44 AM Just purchased and installed New Titan Tow Beast Class 5. The 7 pin connector bracket has to be Removed and installed on New Receiver. Also Unit has A Square Bushing to go down to 2" for your 2" Rigs. The new Extension is quite Stout for Towing with a Camper.
JEBar 03-03-2006, 06:12 AM after only a little over a year of use, the pin hole in our OEM reciever elongated to the point we could feel the hitch shift when starting and stopping while towing our camper ... installed a Reese Titan 5 and it has given good service ... if I had it to do over again I'd go with the Putnam because of the Titan 5's 2 1/2' opening ... have the spacer but there is still a considerable amount of slop when using standard 2" ball hitches ... I like the dogbone style pin locks and haven't been able to find one to fit the Titan

pepperidge 03-07-2006, 03:28 PM I'm not sure if the dually is different but my 285/75/16 spare does not fit:( they have the clearance for a 245 under there... ...265's may fit the 2500 but I also have the Mag Hytec Diff Cover...
I believe this hitch gets some of it's capacity by keeping the weight closer to the frame bolts ala receiver cross tube pushed to the furthest point forward cutting clearance for a larger spare tire...
I'm wondering if the dually hitch would fit mine... if it provides more clearance for the larger spare...Hope this helps...
