Just read an article that indicated that full size Chevy and GMC pickups were the most stolen vehicles in the US everywhere but the West and East coasts (where the worthless *$#^#$s) prefer Hondas.
I'm going to have my new truck delivered to the dealer this Friday. Then am going to make a 5,000 mile round trip to pick up our new fifth wheel. Will need to park at motels for a week or so. And will need to park the truck on the street once I get it home. Too big for the garage and driveway....
What are the best theft deterrents? I'll have a "Club" on the steering wheel.

There are only 2 ways someond can steal you truck. Copy the key (which means they need to get their hands on your keys) or with a tow truck. Your truck has passlock II security system which makes it almost unstealable.
The trucks that are being stolen are 97 and older which do no have passlock II.

Did all HD's come with this Passlock II. I never noticed it on my truck. Nick

Do the trucks come with PASSKEY3? My mother's '01 Silouettte has it, I would think a $40k+ truck would have it too..

My '01 does not have Passlock.
Got a spare key cut at Home Depot, works just fine.
I was wondering if you unplugged the 2 multi-pin connectors on top of the engine, the ones the Juice plugs into. What would happen if a bugler tried to start the truck with them unplugged, fry the ECM? I know, returning to my truck with broken windows and fried computer is better than returning to an empty parking spot. Is there another easy way to disable the truck? I used to install a hidden toggle switch on my gassers fuel injection pump to do the same thing, would that work here?

I also had a key cut at Home Depot to keep in my wallet, and it works fine.
What is differnt about the key in a passlockII from anything else.

Yes ALL 98 and newer GM trucks have passlock II.
This includes yours Dave Ski. Passlock II does not have a chip in the key. You can copy the key and the truck will start. You can not however hotwire it or break the column and turn the switch manually. The computer needs to get a haul effect reading from the key. Without the properly cut key it will not start.

Trucks come with passlock II. This is different then passkey 3. Passkey 3 uses a chip in the key passlock II does not.

I have not tried it, but if you know the correct two wires, you can put a potentiometer inbetween them and dial in the resistance to defeat a Passlock II. It would take time, but it could be done. That's basically what you do when you put in a remote start. Anything can be stolen.

THat is correct c**tag95 to a certain extent. However without knowing what the proper restistance is supposed to be it is pretty much impossible. You are talking a resistance of between 0 and 5k and everything in between with incriments of about 10 ohms. So you are talking about steps of 10 between 0 and 5000. Leaves about 500 combinations. Plus every time it gets the wrong risistance, you have to wait 20 minutes to try the next.
