...and I am hooking up an autometer pyro gauge. I have used thermocouples for datalogging in the past, you can't just extend the wires, throws everything off.

Can I just extend the edge thermocouple wires, or will that throw off the readings?

I'm nearly certain you're going to have to use a lead that's precut to length. Don't go altering it, or you'll have inaccurate readings, as you've already found out.

If you're looking just for extension leads with ring terminals on both ends, I believe Isspro sells them. But I've been wrong before...

We have thermocouple wire for sale by the foot because on a motor home you don’t know how much you need. We also have Isspro wires in six or ten foot lengths so you don’t have to make the ends. Isspro and Auto Meter parts can be mixed or matched, just make sure you don’t get a plug setup if you need the nut and bolt style.

As long as you use alumel and chromel wire and do not create a dissimilar metal junction, you will be fine. You can use a magnet to test which is alumel (magnetic). The best junction is to twist the wire together and then silver solder the junction.

Maybe your's will be different, but my Edge pyro did not work with my Autometer gauges. The operation was very jumpy and inaccurate until I put the new supplied pyro and all was well.

Could just be that my Edge pyro was damaged before, but I can't be sure.

Sounds like a bad connection or probe. We mix them in our shop all the time.

My edge pyro works fine with my autometer guages.

It could be Autometer makes the edge sensor.....

What will happen if you extend the wire with just a copper 18 gauge or so wire?

I beleive you need to use type K thermocouple wire to get accurate readings. If you use anything else you readings won't be correct. Also do not solder the wires.

Is the edge TC, not a type K?

as long as its a type k thermocoupler It should work!!!!!!

Yes it is. So are the Autometer guage wires. I have my edge thermocouple wire and the Edge probe hooked to the Autometer thermocouple wires and have no problems. I get the same readings I did with the Attitude.

I've mixed DiPricol thermocouples with the Edge and it works just fine--the key as others have said is keeping everything "Type K" I think.

Correct me if I'm wrong somebody, but anything you do to alter resistance in a pyro setup will throw readings off, right?
