: Stock air box modification

I modified my stock air box recently by cutting out a nearly triangular section from the front of the box so more air could get into the box and from the front inside of the side by the fender well. There is a pretty good line of sight between the lights straight back into the airbox now.

My question is (and something I should have considered prior to cutting it up obviously) is what happens if you are in bad weather (i.e. rain storm from hell, happens often in Texas) driving? Is there a good possibility now that the filter box is open from the front that water could get in there and moisten the stock paper element enough to possibly have it sucked up into the turbo?

Perhaps this might be the reason why GM has the air opening on the side of the box only I wonder? Has anyone else done this and/or had a problem with a moist paper element filter driving in rain?

I would prefer to stay with paper elements since I think the filtration is superior to that of the gauze/(re)oil elements which is the only reason I haven't gone to a Stage-2 setup yet. It would be nice to see some of these aftermarket air intake setups compared against each other (and stock paper element) particularly the Proguard-7 setup.

Thanks,

Tim

Hey luvthesmellofdiesel, where in Austin do you live? I'm in Cedar Park. I'd like to see your air box before I do mine if you don't mind.

Thanks

Mine has been done like that for about a year and a half. I do have an oily couch cushin but I have never had a problem.

Look at the www.kennedydiesel.com (http://www.kennedydiesel.com) site for info on opening up larger drain hole on bottom of air box.

LaBeym,

Yup, that's where I got the idea to mod the air box. Mine is an '02. I didn't drill the holes in the bottom John mentioned, maybe I should do that.

The problem I am worried about is driving in hard rain where the rain will actually get into the airbox easily now that it's open on the front instead of just the side and quickly disintegrate the filter media which the compressor would quickly feed on (and choke). :-(

Matador,

I live in Milwood.

I found the rain gets in the airbox in the stock configuration. Drilling holes in the bottom just let it get out. I saw the bottom full of water in the stock config, so I don't think you are keeping it dry anyway.

Has anyone with the modified (swiss cheese) intake box been to the dealership and have them ask you what in the hell happened to your intake box? Just curious...
