: pullin the fith wheel w/ juice and attitude

I just pulled my trailer for the first time since I added the juice/***.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Cruise is now useable! Hills that would make it downshift 5 to 4 now cruise on 65 no sweat - no downshift.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gifDownshifted to fourth going over the Blueridges not even close to full throttle (before J/A would down shift to third with the pedal on the floor).

I used level 1, stock exhaust, stock air filter, max egt was 1218, outside air was 48f. I am still considering the exhaust. Any opinions on how much difference it will make? Only on the long steep hills did it get above 1000.

The Juice is the hot ticket. The only thing to worry about with the tow/exhaust change is excess noise. Then again, EGTs should be mildly improved.

I noticed our aviator seems very popular!

It sounds like you could give level 2 a try next time. The Juice makes a huge improvement while towing and it runs as smoothe as silk. I tow in 2 and use 3 when unloaded. Sometimes it's fun when other drivers expect me to be slow and I get to dissapoint them.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif --SS

The noise is what I dont want. Has anybody nailed down numbers on how much it will lower egt's. I am so happy with this truck right now I hate to change anything. Would hate to spend 600+ and end up with a "drone" only to lower egts 50 degrees.

It is a huge improvement! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif Are you running stock exhaust and how heavy is your trailer? One other unrelated question - I am surprised when driving around 25 - 40 mph unloaded with tow/haul mode off my trans show slippage up to 45% settling down at between 10 and 5%. Is that normal?

The torque converter is not locked at this speed.

But is it bad for it to be slipping if the TC is not locked? I was wondering the exact same thing. If I lock it (Tow/Haul mode), the slip almost goes away completely. Should we be driving around in Tow/Haul mode all the time?

My guess is that slip measures the rotational delta between the two shafts. It's perfectly normal and expected that both shafts don't rotate at the same speed when there's no mechanical connection between them like a TC. The only "link" between the shafts is oil when the TC is not locked.

Exactly. The only time you would be concerned is if the torque converter is locked and you have slip.

Pulling a large load with a Juice on level 2 (as an example) and not having the torque converter locked would increase the temperature of the transmission fluid. The torque converter is not 100% efficient in transfering the input power to the output. The delta is given off in heat. Thats my understanding. So you would want to be careful.

Mike L at Ingelwood Transmission is the expert here. Knows this stuff forward and backwards (so to speak).

More questions...

Since the Attitude ECT display doesn't work on 01s, how does the Juice know when the engine is at 80% operating temp. in order to kick in? Is there any way to tell when it kicks in other than feeling the power increase?

Does increasing the low boost fueling setting affect gas mileage?

The tranny slip that you see is completely normal while the TC is not locked. I think I have seen as high as 65% before. I am still running with the stock exhaust but I have considered cutting out the muffler and adapting the pipe to 4 inch with a straight through muffler. Noise is my primary concern, I want to keep it quiet in the cab. The two trailers that I spend most of my time pulling are only 4k and 8.5k. So far EGTs have not been a problem at all but sometimes I am suprised by how high they will get at low rpm with little throttle. It seems like you could get them in the dangerous range while lugging with a manual tranny. I have my tude set to keep it under 1250 pre turbo but I haven't seen it show any backdown yet. When I get the chance I will push it to see how much it takes to get there. --SS

I always feel the Juice come on around 180 degrees. At least that's right around where I can feel more power.

I was curious about that too... what exactly is it doing? and what are the positives/negatives of high and low boost settings?

The low boost setting is fuel added before the turbo "spools up." It increases throttle response by not waiting for boost to build before adding fuel, but adds smoke to the exhaust for the same reason. It's a trade-off for quicker throttle response with more of a "puff" of extra fuel smoke until the turbo can catch up on air. I've been running mine at low boost 4. I ran it at low boost 5 for a while and didn't seem to notice any more throttle response or smoke. Except for an awful lot of full throttle starts in a short time, I don't think this feature would make a noticable change in fuel use.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

I just changed my low boost setting from 3 to 5 and there's a noticeable difference in the throttle response, but haven't noticed any smoke. BTW, I've got the Juice set on level 3 also.

Quiet in the cab is my goal too. My attitude is set at 1250 also and I did not record any backdown. But I have only pulled once. The way some of the Banks exhaust owners describe that system it sounds like I would like it. (Deeper not louder) A drone would drive me nuts.

If I knew adding an exhaust would give me 1000 where I am now seeing 1200 it would be worth it. Does anyone have a real world camparison? Stock numbers vs. 4 inch exhaust numbers.

Thanks for all the replies, this site is a fantastic resource.

The banks lowered my EGT's about 100 degrees is all ...and I installed the banks with an AFE air cleaner so part of the drop could be the air cleaner. From my experience you won't see a 200 degree drop.

I would definately say the Banks is "louder" over stock and there is a very minor drone about 1900 rpm ...then I bought my system about 1 month before they came out with a so-called "quieter" muffler. Have always been interested in trying the new muffler. Even contacted Banks when the new muffler came out and asked if I could trade mufflers ... never received a response.
