I am contemplating a rear suspension modification. Here are two of my choices:

1 -- Remove overload leaf (bottom, thick one) and install Air-Lift Super Duty air bags with auto level control.

or

2 -- Install Velvet Ride shacles and install Air-Lift Super Duty air bags with auto level control.

My objective is to slightly lower the rear of the truck (about 1"),retain the load carrying capacity and retain a smooth ride. I am doing this in preparation to pull a 30' travel trailer.

Has anyone else done either of these modifications?

The truck is an '02 2500HD CC SB D/A 4x4.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

I removed the longest spring and did not install air bags. I choose to no remove the overload leaf, but if you are adding air bags it should be fine. I am only pulling a 7000lb trailer, so I reallying didn't need as much capacity as some. It ended up lowering the back 2" and it still tows great.

I would worry about the Velvet Ride shackles wearing out or failing.

Putting the AirLift Airbags on will raise the rear, as they fit between the axle and frame. The literature indicates that with the minimum pressure (5psi) your truck will retain its normal ride height, but I've gained about 1/2" increase with the bags at the lowest psi. I don't think there is any way you can lower the rear with the bags in place, they are a set size and will not compress beyond a certain point. Of course they will rise also when inflated, by a couple of inches. At least thats's what I'm reading out of your post, if I understand it correctly. Edited by: VFRRider
