: Pre-OEM filter and additional fuel tank
Darin Billing 03-22-2004, 11:48 AM I am looking at adding a Pre-OEM fuel filter. Have been looking at either the Nicktane setup or the Racor system. I would also like to stick a larger fuel tank in the pickup at some point, but don't want it to interfere with the additional fuel filter.
My question is of the Transferflow tank (45 gal) and the Supertank (60 gal) are either going to be a problem? From looking at the install directions from the Supertank site, it looks like that wouldn't work with the Racor setup. How about the Racor setup with the Transferflow?
How about the Nicktane with either tank?
Thanks for your feedback.Edited by: Darin Billing
Idle_Chatter 03-22-2004, 12:47 PM Darin, it depends on your auxiliary tank installation. Some people are using the aux tank as a "transfer tank" that either gravity or pump tranfers to the OEM. My American Tank uses a 6-way valve to transfer fuel pickup, fuel recirc and sender signal from OEM to aux tank when swapped. My 6-way is frame mounted forward of the OEM tank in the location that the Racor and a lot of the frame-mounted pre-OEM filters are using. The Supertank takes up every square inch of space between the driveline/frame/bed and nothing can coexist in there, even the factory fuel cooler. The Nicktane mounts out in the fender outside the frame and forward of the rear wheel, so it should be fine. Nobody said it was going to be easy or cheap to stay on the leading edge!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Darin Billing 03-22-2004, 01:12 PM I see now I should have been a little more specific. By the additional fuel tank, I mean to replace the OEM fuel tank with either a Transferflow tank or a Supertank. I wasn't real thrilled with the idea of losing the fuel cooler with the Supertank.
I would prefer the Racor setup since it has the fuel heater in it, but wouldn't lose any sleep over getting the Nicktane setup either. Will the Racor setup work with the Transferflow OEM replacement?
When pulling the 5'ver, I just don't like having to start looking for fuel after 200 miles of driving. Although, the wife and daughter are probably due for a potty break about then any way. It's just that sometimes the towns are 100+ miles apart unless you don't stray too far off the Interstate.
Idle_Chatter 03-22-2004, 01:32 PM The Transferflow actually wraps around the OEM fuel cooler, but goes forward into the same area being used for the Racor mountings. If you want to go Racor, you'd have to come up with a custom mounting outside the frame rail for either tank. I'm considering a Supertank, but if I installed one on my truck I would custom fit not only my aux tank valve but also my OEM fuel cooler outside the frame or elsewhere.
Darin Billing 03-22-2004, 01:53 PM Thanks, looks like I will be going with the Nicktane setup then and at a later point, the Transferflow tank. I'm not real interested in coming up with some custom mods to get the Racor system to work with either tank. Besides, the extra 19 gallons with the Transferflow will be plenty. It was just with that 26 gallon tank pulling the 5'ver, that you really have to plan ahead on your fuel stops.
Diesel Power 03-22-2004, 03:06 PM i have a TFI 45 Gal. in my truck and the frame-mount won't fit as the tank blocks it. that was why i originally mounted my nicktane kits where i did. i think supertank should be fine also, but in all fairness i haven't see one.
Darin Billing 03-22-2004, 03:47 PM Thanks for the info Nick. I just didn't want to jump in getting an additional filter and then find out later that I would have to rework everything to get it to work with a replacement fuel tank.
You might want to take a look at the installation instructions for the Supertank. They have you cutting out a lot of the fuel lines along with removing the factory fuel cooler. They replace that with a finned fuel line.
Diesel Power 03-22-2004, 04:34 PM Darin,
i would rather see one in person but that would be a good starting point!
i wonder if anyone has measured the fuel temp before and after going with the finned fuel line.
Nick
LaBeym 03-22-2004, 07:52 PM Just completed a TF 45 gal install w/Nicktane Filter. Went with this set up because it did not require removal of OEM fuel cooler! Did not wish to give GM an excuse to deny any warranty issues. Remember, fuel circulation is used to cool electronics on the Dmax.
newbie 03-23-2004, 02:01 PM Labeym,
Did you install the transerflow yourself, and if so about how long did it take you. I ordered one and wasn't sure how difficult it was to do.http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
Thanks,

gwmayes 03-23-2004, 10:47 PM newbie,
I installed my 45 transfer flow myself, in the driveway, in about 5 hours, really taking my time, drinking beers in between reading the instructions. I could probably do the next one in about an hour (especially if I could get someone younger than my 60 years to hand me the wrenches!)
Ran the 26 gallon down to the fumes before I removed it. Put a jack under it, thinking it would be heavy. The whole thing with a couple gallons of fuel probably only weighs about 30# so don't waste your time lowering with a jack
Raised left rear of truck with 3 ton floor jack (required ALL the height I could get out of it). Slide out old tank. Slid in new tank. Carefully lowered truck over tank. Then raised Transfer Flow into position using TWO floor jacks.
Local installers wanted $200-$300 for this install. I trust my skills more than most here in the Land of Manana. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Nearly made the run from Albuquerque to Ft. Collins (500 mi) on ONE TANK while towing the FW....... GREAT!
BTW, get the high-speed filler neck while you are at it! I couldn't run the standard fill neck on even the lowest click of the large nozzle.
Oh, BTW Darin: I have the Nicktane filter also. Piece of cake install for that as well.Edited by: gwmayes
newbie 03-24-2004, 07:08 AM Thanks, I think I'll try it myself.

Thanks for the information. I will probably have to wait for next years tax refund to get the TF fuel tank. Although, it would be nice to have it yet this summer. Wife wants us to take the 5'ver to Texas in June. She doesn't get it yet, go there in November, return in April.
