I have a 96 Z71 ext with a 4" lift 33"s and I am kind of wanting to convert to a diesel for my next truck. I want a ext cab short bed Duramax. I don't really pull any trailers to often and I mostly haul my fourwheeler. I guess it's o.k because my friend has one and hes doesnt haul trailers every weekend or anything, but he drives about 40 miles everyday. Can anybody convince me that it would be worth it. If I got one it would be Powered up, my neighbor has a Cummins with stacks and he thinks he's the ****. If everything holds up I would pull it but I don't want to break anything easy. Convince me please. Smoke and POWER.

This is my first diesel and I will never go back to gas! Have you driven a Duramax? I was unsure just like you and can only say I made the right choice!Edited by: Voodoo

Never have driven one, I guess I should go test drive one huh. A couple of my friends have Cummins that I have driven. Engine is too noisy. I want stealthier engine noise. Do you really like everything about the Duramax?

My old truck was a 98 xcab Z71 with a 5.7 and mild mods...headers, exhaust, and intake. It was my daily driver and also pulled my snowmobile and travel trailers. I had upgraded to LT tires and airbags which helped towing quite a bit. It was a fun truck to drive but my growing son was no longer comfortable in the back seat.

A year ago I upgraded to a crewcab dmax/alli and have no regrets. The truck pulls either trailer with ease and gets 50% better MPG pulling the trailers faster. As a daily driver I don't have any big complaints except worrying about fuel quality and waiting for the darn thing to warm up in the winter.

The DMax is a bit of overkill for a daily driver but is a great combination of power and fuel economy in a big, comfortable go-anywhere vehicle. If you want big power the diesel will get you there with a lot less work than any gasser.

I like mine!

my old ride was a modded dodge 488 v-10 , cam, port/polish/ rrockers and made 279 RWHP....

Mileage wise, and towing capability, my DMX has it beat hands down... no contest whatsoever and no regrets (other than GM's plain jane styling)

hey Grizzly... go Duramax!!! I have an 04', just bought it last month... I had a 96' 2500HD 5.7 liter... This is my first diesel and it is my daily driver, everyday I appreciate it even more... there is no comparison to anything else I have ever driven... The Allison makes this truck really hook up... by the way, I see you're from Monroeville, I'm about 20 minutes north of you in Huron... PM me if you want to get together and see what a Duramax is all about!

I am sold on my Duramax. Some food for thought: You can buy a bunch of gas for the added price of a diesel engine, it will cost you more in insurance. I won't be buying a gas burner any time soon but I dont think it is always the most economical decision.

Its like the guy always says on "My Classic Car" Do you really need a truck like this? Do you really want a truck like this?

YES

You can't add 145hp to a gasser for $700!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

It's my first diesel as well. I will never buy another gasser. I get much better mileage with my crew cab 4x4 diesel vs my last 2wd extended cab gasser. Plus, I spent under $700 for 125 Hp and it took all of 10 minutes. Plus, I didn't even have to open the motor. Also, you get the support and ideas for this great site to keep up with anyone you want to smoke. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif I spent 3 times that much to get maybe 30 Hp on my gasser. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

That's why I want to switch to Duramax power. You can up the power pretty high with less money than for a gasser. I like the more fuel mileage fact, My truck with the 33x12.5x15 probably get 9 mpg maybe or so. I would like to know everything about maintenance and what you have to do to it so many miles after breaking in. I hope I would find a dealer that is not a prick that would search to see if I did any mods to it. Tell me everythinghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

19-22 MPG highway, 14-16 MPG city, diesel now cheaper than regular, drives like a sports car / rocket, sounds cool, higher resale value if you have to sell, on and on. I don't regret buying a diesel in any way and will probably never own a gas powered truck again.

z71 my last truck was a 99 z71.... my next ruck will be another dmax... with juice!!! youll love it..... your wallet will hate it... not cause it guzzles fuel, but youll find no matter what you mod, you need to mod something else.

I have an 02'3500 D/A & my wife has a 03'2500 D/A.She sold her ElDorado & bought the 3500 used so she could get the 2500 for herself. You'd have to shoot her to get that truck from her! Besides everyone needs a spare.....

Diesels don't guzzle fuel as much as gas do they. All the diesels I've been around hold fuel for ages. Tell me it would be a good thing to buy a Duramax. I can get the GM plan to because one of my relatives works there. I'll have a Brand New truck fully loaded 4x4 ext cab or crew and DURAMAX!

Bought an '03 x-cab gasser in Jan '03. After 3 months, I HATED it...crappy mileage, too small in back for the kids...couldn't change the damn radio out (don't ask...sometimes it's the little things that finally piss you off). http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif

Just when GM-S 6 month probation was up, I stumbled on an '02 crew cab that was the s***!!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Dealer gave me a little more than what I owed on the '03 so I didn't lose anything and I just swapped all my add-ons over. I've been a happy camper ever since. Great mileage, awesome room for everything, pretty much a kick-butt truck!!!!! My wife thought I was nuts until I brought it home, now she knows why I was thrilled.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

I won't go back to a gasser...nope, won't do it.
