: 4 inch exhaust too loud

Picked up my 01 D/A from my father. He's taken excellant care of it but I've got a question about the exhaust.

He put on a full 4 inch from the turbo back, but found the downpipe resonated too much and put the stock down pipe back on.

I'm finding it resonates too much at around 1500 RPM. Not really a diesel noise and not a good, deep exhaust noise. Just an annoying drone.

Much louder then my 94 with no cat or exhaust.

I'm not sure what muffler he has on it but I do have access to both the bigger downpipe and the original exhaust (he kept it).

I can't drive it like it is.

Is a different muffler a good place to start? Has anyone experienced this?

Other then the exhaust and a K&N filter (being replaced by OEM soon) this thing is stock. I do plan an edge/attitude in a year or so but will only be looking at running at 2.

What kind of exhaust is it? I know of a few people who run 2 mufflers inline. Two free flowing mufflers that is.

There is also another fix that consists of attaching some weighted cylinders on a clamp to your downpipe:

I'm not really sure what brand it is. Just something he picked up at Lordco (Cdn store). I have the bill and it wasn't cheap, just not named on the invoice.

Put the rest of the 4" back on and check on a resonator (short muffler) from MBRP. Mine has the drone at 16-1700 but I don't cruise at the RPM so I learned to ignore it. Later! Frank

I agree with Frank Blum, Put the rest of the 4" back on

I would just replace the muffler though.
Simple design differences in mufflers can result in HUGE differences in sound quality.
I have had great luck with the Magnaflow. It is a full 4" straight through design, and is very quiet with no resonance.

Thanks. That's kinda where I'm headed.

Just going to wait until it's above freezing here.
