Anyone buy the GM extended warranty???
Is it worth it?
And if so, how much was it?
Thanks in advance.

Without question GMPP is the best product on the market for GM's. I've worked for GMAC and MIC who administers GMPP. Their coverage is the most comprehensive and most widely accepted by dealers. When I last worked with them, they were paying out over 90% of their premiums in claims, so when you hear the phrase, "this one is as good as GMPP and costs less" -- it's baloney. More often than not, they are charging you more for less.

I've also worked as a F&I consultant working with dealers to improve back-end profits and extended warranties are often sold waaaaay above the price suggested by GM. GM provides dealers a chart of both cost and MSRP for GMPP plans for the different vehicles. Ask to see the one for MSRP on your vehicle and don't pay over that, in fact negotiate a little.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Just purchased an additional 3 year/120,000KM for mine. Wasn't planning on it up until 2 months ago but since things are starting to go south on this truck I feel I'll get my money's worth out of it.

I had great success with GMPP on my previous truck. I bought the truck used with 35,000 miles and transferred the GMPP warranty to my name for something like $35.00. I then proceeded to have a bunch of stuff fixed at the dealer under warranty up to 50,000 miles with no questions asked. It was great! Based on that experience I purchased the GMPP with my 2003 truck.

Does anyone know if the extended warranty after purchasing hte truck, but before the existing 3/36 one expires?

So long as your rig is in factory warranty, you can purchase a GMPP, but the accumulated mileage goes against whatever mileage/term you purchase.

I went to the GMPP site, but was a little unclear on the packages available for my truck. Also, prices were not listed. Can they be purchased online at a reasonable discount?

We got the serivce contract when we got the truck. It was 5/100000 for the rest fo the truck since the engine is already a 5/100000 warrenty. It cost us $2250.00 at the time of sale. I'm sure that I will get that out of it before we drive the miles off. I doubt, with the way we drive, that it will expire in years before we get all the miles in.

We had a GM warrenty on the Van and it was great. I expect that this one will be as well. I like the GM one since you can take it to ANY dealer for serive. Our Ford warrenties you had to go back to YOUR dealer or have then call and get approval, or worse still, have it fixed then submit a claim. We are glad to be back GM. I hope we don't have to use it but every vehicle I have had since the van in '96 has needed something after the 3/36 has expired.

Good luck.

Is that price for the GMPP good only at time of delivery or after you already purchased????. Iam thinking about getting the GMPP warranty but still looking for the best price.

No I got my 04 CC two weeks ago and this sales guy sent me the paperwork in the mail and said sign and pay and all is well.

The reason I didn't buy at the steler is I heard that some dealers are selling the warranty at like $100.00 over their cost to people over the net. Makes sense $100.00 is bett that no $$.

Dealer wantes $2,500 for the exact same policy, that I could get for $1,365.00, man that chaps my hide.

When I bought my 01 it had 34,500 or so miles on it. I bought teh extended out to 100k. At 36,600 all front diff internals and all T-case seals and teh pump were replaced. First time I have ever purchased an extended warranty. Sure glad I did!

Yikes! That's less than 1/2 of what a local dealer quoted me. Sounds like I should do some shopping around. Can this warranty be purchased from any GM dealer (i.e. GMC or Chevy)? Or, does it have to be a dealer that sells your make of car?

I don't know about the GMPP warranty but when I purchased my new truck in January, the dealer said that it USED to be you could purchase the GMPP warranty up until you reached either 36 months or 36,000 miles; they said that HAS NOW CHANGED that you must purchase the GMPP warranty before either 12 months OR 12,000 miles. I would double check with your dealer on that; when I purchased my 01 Suburban, the warranty for 5/100,000 was like $2400; I had a aftermarket warranty (and some friends also recommended) by "WarrantyByNet" for my '01 Suburban; very pleased accepted anywhere including dealers and the few items I needed after the factory warranty expired were done by my regular mechanic and paid for. They can be checked out at www.warrantybynet.com (http://www.warrantybynet.com) . I was offered a GMPP for my 2500hd for 5/100,000 at about $2500 and since GM is already covering the Duramax for 5/100,000 already, I think I am going to get another warrantybynet policy for 5/100,000 for everything else (including the Allison) and they are quoting me about $875 for this coverage; just goes to show how much the stealers are making just on warranties alone!

I purchased a GMPP at the time I purchased my Duramax.

I got 6 years or 60K (whichever comes first) with a $200 deductible for $1K and covers everything for peace of mind! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Sorry but I have to call BS on that one. Dealer Cost on a 72 month, 100000 mile GMPP (Class 4, $200 deductible) is $1585......

My dealer added an interesting twist that I really appreciated. We have a radio talk show consumer advocate here in the Atlanta market, Clark Howard, and he usually advises against extended warranties as not a good value. In fact, the stigma associated with extended warranties is so bad here that my dealer offers, in writing, a complete refund of the entire premium if you never use it! Seems like a win win to me.

I paid $1320 for 5 yrs/75,000 miles with $200 deductible.

I was looking at one 7 years 74000 miles for $1300 but it power train only. My other truck is is a 95 and I only have 76,000 on it. and i dont have any fancy crap in the truck. I can deal with fixing broken door handle or window crank. I see if i have any injecor or trans problems in the next 33 months theb ill get it.

Who was the member working at Classic Chevrolet selling extended warranties? I may be interested...

Kendall69
03-22-2004, 10:20 PM
I don't know the member, but I talked to Blake Huddleson 817-410-1560 Classic Chevrolet and he was the one that quoted
5/60 $100 deductable @ $820.00 and 6/72 $100 deductable @ $ 1,365.00
The sales guy said after that it goes sky high.
He said this was the better deal 7/72 for $1,365.00.
I'm hettin ready to sign, just wanted to see if anyone had a better price.

Kartattack,

The member you are referring to is Blake Huddleston (TXDMAX on this site). He is real easy to deal with and seems like a straight shooter. You can contact him at Classic Chevrolet in Grapevine, Texas -- the number is 1-800-259-1200.

Thanks, that's somewhat better than warrantybuynet's quote of, "6 years or 72,000 total odometer miles: $1,417 with a $100 deductible or $1,617 with a $0 deductible."

I'm debating, but I'd rather go with GMPP for about the same money.

I had a problem with my warranty. I had specifically asked if a lift kit voided the warranty on the motor/trans and was told no. Now I am told yes because the size of tires throws the computer off and may set off codes etc etc.. I will get more details tomorrow.

I paid $1667 for 100K miles and will probably get my money back for it (within 60 days full refund) because of this.

GMPP is by far the best for the consumer. Techs dont like it though as they pay only factory time for repairs. Authorization only takes the service advisor a few minutes and very seldom do you wait for an inspector. Much faster operation than others. Edited by: Joelman

I'm on my third warrantybynet and have had no problems as I mentioned earliest. My mechanic has other clients with it and he has had no issues with them. I you get a quote, make sure they know its the Duramax because they will then quote you the "premium wrap" coverage which covers everything but the Duramax since GM covers that until 100,000, quite a bit cheaper then the Premium coverage.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Was that the GM warranty or an aftermarket company? I need to make this decision tomorrow, and the finance guy is pushing a couple of plans that are WAY more expensive than what you are indicating. Give me some details! Thanks.

I purchased the 6 year / 72,000 mile GMPP warranty for $2000 when I bought mine. I opted for the $0 deductible, as I can use it for some small things that I may have otherwise tried to fix myself or take to another garage. For a few hundred more than with the $100 deductible, I figured this was a wise buy. I have never bought an extended warranty before, but it seemed like the right thing to do with this truck due to its complexity.

I just read a post about the high cost of front and rear rotors. I realize pads generally are not covered, but does anyone who has a GMPP or warrantybynet or other aftermarket extended warranty have any experience on getting coverage for the rotors?

I know there ar less exspensive option, but I just went through that thing with (warranty GOLD.com - can't remeber the name) who was rated number one with edmunds.com etc etc. and they went belly up and I was SOL.
GM for me, they've been around and will be around.

Has anyone ever had experience with Fidelity warranty services out of Florida? There program is called the Care Free protection plan.

When I bought my truck the dealer presented this company as my only option. After having the truck for a couple of months GM mailed me and informed me of there warranty. I still have the option of switching, just not sure if it is worth the hassle and small fee?Edited by: Bronco

You get a refund, but boy do you get the shaft. I just traded my wife's car, 2002 Chevy Blazer, that had 20,200 miles on it for a 2004 Chevy Trail Blazer. Had the extended warranty on the first Blazer. 5yr or 75,000 miles. Paid $1,250 and when they cashed in the extended warranty, that I had not even got to yet, all I got back, pro rated, was $575.00.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif You just can't get to the Stealers. Edited by: TX-DMAX

Kendall69
03-28-2004, 01:56 PM
I don't know how that works, you would think that the warranty would start the day AFTER the factory warranty ended, and in your case it didn't even start yet?? The othe option would be to not even buy the warranty until your milage hits 35, 999 or 2 years 364 days.
I'm sure we will never beat them at their game.

Teck
03-28-2004, 03:28 PM
It starts the day you buy the truck 0 miles,as far as the pro rate if you sell early. But a 75k warranty is only 36001- 75000 mile warranty, when it comes to what it covers. So they screw us if you get out early, because they pro rate for somthing we get with the truck from the factory, not that you paid them for.

PS. know from experience

Kendall69---That is what I told the stealer when I bought the new Trail Blazer, wait to buy the warranty later, but he looked in the book and said OK, then the same warranty that is going to cost you now, $1495 If you wait one year to come back and buy it the price is $2495.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif Didn't even ask about after 2 years and 35,999 miles. The one year price was enough for me to go ahead and get it as I was buying the car. You just can't beat the crooks. Pay me now or pay allot more later.http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
