: Tailgate cable recall
a bear 03-20-2004, 07:08 PM Saw on the news last night that GM will be issuing a recall on tailgate cables. The Silverado was mentioned but the year was not. It appears that there was a couple cases where the tailgate came open, popped the cables and sent the tailgate flying into traffic. Edited by: a bear

Kennedy 05-27-2004, 06:23 PM Speaking of straps mine broke today!
Shoulda installed the VR straps before, but now I did!
No sense waiting around for GM on the cables...
Funny thing is, I just climbed in and out on the gate MINUTES before they popped!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif
Elaine and her mother had the dogs into the vet and her mother went to lightly step on the gate with one foot and it flopped. Guess they were good for one thing: mother-in law traps...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

DMAXPWR 05-27-2004, 07:01 PM I got the recall notice a couple of weeks ago, and tried to schedule an appt. to get in to my dealer. They told me they would not have the replacement cables til mid summer. Why send the notice so early then I thought?
Max Power 05-27-2004, 07:03 PM Break your cables and tell them that one of your kids was on the tailgate when they broke and broke their arm. That will speed it up.

NightStalker 05-28-2004, 05:19 AM The letter states that if your dealer does not have the new SS cable and yours breaks, take it to the dealer and they will put on the standard cable until they get in the new ones.
T.P.N. 05-28-2004, 09:10 AM Unfortunately, there was a situation in my neighborhood a few weeks or so ago; 2 kids working with a lawn care company traveling from one house to the next (few doors down) on the tailgate of a Silverado. Straps broke & 1 kid fell on the back of his head, knocked unconscious, went into a coma & died a day later. 19 years old.

Probably a lawsuit pending now. I was waiting on a story where someone was seriously hurt, but that is just terrible. Did you witness it happen?
WYO_DMAX 05-28-2004, 12:08 PM That's a terrible accident. Mine both broke with me on the tailgate loading a sack of QuickCrete. I fell, but wasn't hurt. I'm surprised it didn't dent the tailgate.
The next day I took the letter to my dealer. They hadn't heard of the recall. Since the recall was "in the system" yet, I had to buy new straps. I was NOT happy.

I did not, but a friend of mine (happens to be an ER doctor) apparently was the first to the scene & he said it did not look good for the kid from the start.
I'm not a big supporter of all the lawsuits thrown around these days, but I wouldn't blame the family if one arose from this . . .
srode 05-28-2004, 11:16 PM Has everyone recieved a notice or are there others that haven't yet like me? I know several folks at work got the notes, but not me yet. Build day Oct 04, assume it applies to me too.
Victory Red 05-29-2004, 01:01 AM if I remember correctly everyone with a 99 and up should receive a recall notice about the straps.
BLACKDMAX 05-29-2004, 10:20 PM For those of us that have not received the letter could someone scan and post please.
