: Coolant leak!!!
My truck is leaking coolant. Not a large amount, but a few drips everytime I stop. I noticed a wet, orange spot on the garage floor while installing a MikeL transmission cooler on my truck.
The leak is on the passenger side, but I can't figure out where it's comming from. I have noticed coolant residue on the lower passenger side control arm, the intercooler pipe in that area, on the front axel, and on the inside of the fender.
Does anyone have any idea where my leak might be?
Here is where the coolant drip appears on the concrete when it is parked.

Here is a picture from underneath the truck showing one of the places where coolant can be spotted.

Water Pump weep hole is a possibility.
Lower radiator hose and clamps. Hose and clamps often need to be replaced at 60K-100K mi.
Is the leak consistent or does it come and go every few days?
Diesel Dragon 02-14-2006, 12:28 AM The tube fron the overflow tank is in that area
or you can check the lower radiator hose clamp.
Mine started leaking from a poorly installed lower clamp 2 years after I bought it.
1BADDMAX 02-14-2006, 05:38 PM I had to replace a hose clamp because of a small leak.
I had to replace a hose clamp because of a small leak.
I tried replacing one of the hose clamps last weak because I thought thats where the leak was coming from. I was wrong, it's still leaking. I'll have to take a closer look at it tommorrow.
Thanks everyone for your help so far.

Can't the drips be blown to the passenger side.
03 Duramax 02-14-2006, 09:47 PM the drips can blow all over under the truck. i agree with checking the hose clamps. good luck
chipper 02-14-2006, 09:58 PM Check the 1/2" X 3-4" long horizontial hose just above the water pump. This one cracks on the side next to the block.Hard to see. Pressurize the radiator , then check.
ShumDit 02-15-2006, 02:52 AM Kurt ~ there is a thread on one of these forums, me thinks this place, that addresses a concern re the coolant attacking a small hose on the eng topside, passenger side inboard of the valve cover area (turbo?) its tuff to find. IIRC it can be discovered while up to temp (under pressure) and wigglling the small hoses in that area but can cause a serious burn. Might try a search on whatever the coolant name is ~ its near midnite right now and not coming to mind. My forgetter is very good at this hr.
G'luck

Sasquach 02-15-2006, 03:41 AM check to see if you have too much coolant in your overflow tank. i had the same problem and it was too much in the overflow the hose was leaking
Diesel Power 02-15-2006, 04:05 AM i've had the aluminum hard line leak that bolts to the PS of the motor at the front. it has a couple bends in it and is about a foot or so long if i remember. it has small brackets for mounting points which causes it to crack on the welds.. mine leaked so little we didn't know it until we took the intercooler tube out and noticed where the leak had discolored it..
joakley 02-15-2006, 12:08 PM Almost all the antifreeze on mine was down the drivers side and into the back of the wheel well. generally it will blow back from the leak and not so much sideways especially when cruising down the highwayand the air is blowing THROUGH the engine compartment.
ShumDit 02-15-2006, 04:09 PM When my wp leaked the dripping was slightly off center in the front to the drivers side. It would do it while driving and the slipstream blew it along the oilpan. Dealer couldn't find it the first time.
burnduals 02-16-2006, 01:59 AM Mine leaked on that same side in the same place. I put it on a rack and looked and looked. The only place I could determine a leak was from my block heater on that side. I think it leaks past the oring on the block heater when it cools down or something? It only does it every now and then and I the coolant level has only changed a negligible amount. Look there may be your problem too?

I'm pretty sure the aluminum hard line is where it is leaking. I talked to dmaxallitech last night and it seems fairly common, enough so that he stocks the part. Eric (dmaxallitech) is awesome :ro)
Alright, I replaced the aluminum hardline and think that my problem is fixed. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I would especially like to thank Diesel Power because if it wasn't for his post about the aluminum hard line he found leaking, I wouldn't have taken a harder look at it.

I pluged on end with my hand and blew air in with my aircompressor. I then put some soapy water where I thought it was leaking and sure enough, it bubbled.
DieselDale 02-24-2006, 01:37 AM Thanks for the nice picture post for all of our benefit on the 02 models at least.
