: WHAT KIND OF OIL?
rickles04 03-18-2004, 03:56 PM WHAT KIND OF OIL DOES EVERYBODY USE? THE REASON I WAS ASKING WAS BECAUSE I WAS THINKING OF CHANGING AND WAS WONDERING WHAT WAS GOOD. I AM USING CASTROL HEAVY DUTY AND NOT REAL SURE IF ITS MADE FOR MY TRUCK SO I THOUGHT I MIGHT CHANGE.
Max Power 03-18-2004, 04:03 PM Mobile Delvac 1 5w-40 at the moment. Good stuff but expensive.
CStone 03-18-2004, 04:27 PM Chevron Delo 400 15w-40
I've only changed my oil on this truck once so far, so take that into consideration.
Idle_Chatter 03-18-2004, 04:48 PM I've used Shell Rotella-T 15W40, Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W40, and Shell Rotella-T 5W40 semi-synthetic. Still got at least one change of all three on-hand. Will be trying Schaeffer's 7000 15W40 and maybe Mobil Delvac-1 in the future. Any modern diesel oil with the proper ratings is fine. I prefer the 15W40 regular oils in the warm months and a synthetic in the colder ones. I've had excellent oil analysis results on all the brands that I've used so far.
Dura_Mike 03-18-2004, 05:02 PM Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 is inexpensive at Costco. I used it for 168,000 miles in my '84 6.2L diesel before I sold the truck.
Rotella 15w-40 is inexpensive from Sam's Club or Wally World.
Both have the recommended API service designations for the LLY and LB7.

If I wasn't using the above, my next choice would be Chevron Delo 400.
In Vermont, where we take our snow tires off on June 15 and put them back on August 15, Shell Rotella 5w-40 synthetic.

HOOKEM 03-18-2004, 08:12 PM Schaeffer's 7000 Supreme 15w40 Synthetic Blend. A shade under $13.00 a gallon at my local Schaeffer's dealer. Excellent product, reputation, and backed up with research. There are several sites out there with the research, just check via search engine.
Just chiming in.

Same as what Pick said, until I get 10,000 on the truck. Then it's Delvac 1 for the rest of it's life.
Corsair 03-18-2004, 10:43 PM Considered Delvac-1 could not find it anywhere, Went with Rotella-T 15w-40.

4x4man 03-19-2004, 09:03 AM Delo 400 for me. Plan to stick with it for the life of the truck. The truck will wear out before the DMAX will anyway, so any dino CI-4 oil will do the job.
Heartbeat Hauler 03-19-2004, 10:23 AM Rotella 15W-40 for me @27K no issues. Might use the Rotella Syn 5W-40 next winter just for better starts when it's cold, then back to the 15W-40 in the spring.

MADDMAX 03-19-2004, 12:00 PM How about Amsoil 15/ 40 marine diesel? Has anybody used it and what do you think?
dmax lover 03-19-2004, 02:11 PM ditto here - delo 400 from costco; Doesn't get cold enough to warrant synthetic, and I am going with 5k mile change intervals regardless of oil...
Doing chevron in the transmission too - chevron atf from costco - I am going to change it out annually. Cost per quart is less than a buck and it has "iso-syn" label (chevron hydro-cracking process which gives "nearer to synthetic performance"?).

Fireman 03-20-2004, 12:16 PM How about Amsoil 15/ 40 marine diesel? Has anybody used it and what do you think?
I just put this in my truck last week. It is noticibly quieter running.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif and oil pressures seem to be running the same as with the oil the dealership used.
I also bought the Amsoil gear lube and plan on changing both diffs next week.
This is the first oil change I have done on my truck myself. I also installed a Fumoto drain valve...Definitely a must have product!
I plan on changing the filter at about 3-4k mile intervals, and oil changes at 7-8k intervals. I was thinking of using Mobile 1, but after talking with Greg from AV lube, decided to give the Amsoil a try. It is also less expensive than the Mobile1 synthetic. The infamous tick has quieted down since I changed the oil also.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
I was very pleased with AV lube's service, I placed my order with Greg over the phone on a Friday, and I received my order on Monday! Wow!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif I ordered my fuel filters, ss bleeder screws, gear lube and fumoto valve from him also.
Kevin
Edit: I also got an oil analysis kit from him...I plan on taking a sample at my next oil change.Edited by: Fireman

I have purchased Mobil Delvac 1 online several times from AVLUBE. They are a supporting vendor on this forum.

Sometime this spring, Mobil will be selling Delvac 1 under the name of Mobil 1 Truck & SUV at retail outlets. It will be available in Walmart and auto part stores. Keep a look out for it.

Kent Tuttle 03-20-2004, 12:50 PM How about Amsoil 15/ 40 marine diesel? Has anybody used it and what do you think?
I have used it in my '99 diesel sub, boat, and d-max. I recently sold a 95 Chevy Cavaliar that had a 175K on it using Amsoil. I think the key with whatever motor oil you decide on is staying with a good maintence shedule. Just my 2 cents.
CRUSHER 03-21-2004, 05:19 AM I've used Shell Rotella 15W-40 for years in several different trucks (from 300 hp to 500 hp) with excellent results. However, my D-MAX got it's first change at 5000 miles with Mobile Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 for two reasons. Some tests I've read shows the 1300 to flow SLIGHTLY better at colder temps. The 1300 is also a little cheaper at my Wally World. BOTH oils are, IMHO, very good. As far as the issue of synthetic vs dino goes I'm in favor of the dino for MOST light duty pick-up truck applications. Unless you operate in an extremely cold climate or you wish to go to a really extended oil change ( mileage wise), I see no great value in using synthetic motor oil. I will continue to use the 1300 and change it and the filter every 5000 miles.-------------------------http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif------------Phil

I do change it every 3,000 miles.

yeast 04-10-2004, 08:59 AM I run Delvac 1. I researched oils quite a bit, and have a close friend who works in fluids and lubricants at GM. He has been testing oils for GM for over 20 years (a chemical engineer) and seems to strongly endorse Mobil lubricants and Texaco (havoline) lubricants. I stick with mobil for everything, even grease, gear lubes, etc. If you don't want the expense of delvac 1 ($100 a case/ $25 a gallon) then I would run delvac 1300 which is the organic version and much much cheaper. I run 1300 in my backhoe, and have been happy with that as well. Given a Duramax is a $5000 option, I run synthetic (Delvac 1) in my truck. For intervals, I change about every 250 hrs (same as my backhoe) or 7,500 miles, whichever comes first.
Kendall69 04-10-2004, 04:47 PM Why is it so hard to find Delvac 1. I've been looking in my area for a week now and about a dozen auto parts stores and or truck stops, Sams club, walmart, costco, and when I say Delvac 1, I ALWAYS get a HUH????Edited by: Kendall69

Hound 04-11-2004, 03:19 PM I'm running castro syntec 5-40 but I'm curious why I haven't seen anyone else using it?
It appears thet the reason you haven't seen anyone else comment on Castrol Syntec is because it doesn't meet the API specification that the Duramax manual (Diesel Supplement) recommends.
Straight from the Castrol website and specifically about Syntec:
SAE 5W-40: is engineered specifically to meet the Volkswagen engine warranty requirements, exceeding VW 502 00 and 505 00. Exceeds all car and light truck manufacturer's warranty requirements for the protection of gasoline, diesel and turbocharged engines where API SL, SJ, SH, CF or CD is recommended. Porsche approved and also exceeds European ACEA: A3, B3, B4, MB 229.3, MB 229.1, BMW LL-98. Meets the engine protection requirements of Corvette GM 4718M, Volvo, BMW, Mercedes Benz and ILSAC GF-3 for API Certified Gasoline Engine Oils.
It does not have the CH-4 or CI-4 API certifications that the diesel supplement calls for.Edited by: Hound

Hound is correct, Syntec 5W-40 does not meet CH-4 or CI-4 as required by the Duramax. Also, it is not generally available other than at Volkswagen dealers.
I use Rotella Syn 5W-40 purchased at WalMart.
Kendall69 04-12-2004, 04:30 PM I just got off the phone with Mobil explaing what a hard time I am having buying Delvac 1, and he says buy the SUV stuff, it's the same thing. Problem solved, because I can buy that stuff.

BlueMaxxxx 04-12-2004, 04:49 PM Whats the problem finding Delvac 1 ?? You can order right off the web from George at AV Lube. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Kendall69 04-12-2004, 05:46 PM I don't even want to guess what shipping would be on 6 cases, yes I said six cases of oil.
If I can find it local I could save the shipping cost.
But, with the SUV Mobil being the same product, I'm good to go.
ChevyPackin'Heat 04-13-2004, 10:05 AM Amsoil. Had too many gassers go the limit with none of them requiring top off between changes, and I never change more than once a year. I find it interesting that someone would choose an oil for the cost and then change it every 3000 mileshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif
Amsoil with analysis should allow extended oil changes to the 10K to 15K, and at that rate its effective cost is less than a buck a quart as compared to the change every 3000 miles at 2-3 bucks a quart.
We are talking about a $45K truck, and the cost of oil is not much of an operating cost percentage. I say put the best you can buy and run ithttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
From the various post here, any quality oil should make the MAX happy, it is a matter of how often you want to crawl under the ole gril. I am getting too old for much of that.
