I just swapped my OE shocks for Bilsteins, and the front upper stem nuts can be tightened down so far that the rubber bushings "marshmallow" seriously. Is there an amount of compression to look for, like about even with the washer diameter, or should I have used the stock bushings with their internal metal sleeve that gives a definite end of stroke to the nut?

I used the ones that came with the Bilsteins and tightened the top front down until the isolator was compressed to about the same diameter as the washer, maybe a tiny bit more. They've been in for 4k miles so far and work fine.

I smashed mine to as close to the same diameter as I could determine by eye. No problems and loving them http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

are you putting the shocks in while the truck is jacked up? The tire will hang down some while that is the case and the shock will 'stretch'. this will cause the top bushing to look over compressed.
