: Dealer Extras - "Wisdom" Sought
First time writer here.... Been reading the forum for several months, preparing to buy our first new truck. Great posts, lots of help, etc. Well done all. Thanks. Hope this is an acceptable forum for this issue.
Took delivery on our 04 2500HD CCSB D/A 4X yesterday. Love the truck, can't wait to pull something. Has been a good experience with the dealer....... then yesterday our salesman introduced the "extras guy." Out of the blue we were pitched undercoating, security kill switches (already installed - without our knowledge), treatment to protect the new EPA required "soft paint," etc. Pretty deceptive technique too.
Declined all, not buying anything without research & shopping around.
The question... not having bought a vehicle for 9 years, I would ask how are the propects for a Sierra holding up to underbody rust these days. I am thinking a lot may have changed in materials/construction over the last decade. I will be towing horses to MD. VA, NC, PA. Year-round. Rain or shine.
Thanks for the great site and tons of info. My apologies if this is the wrong place. Best, Tom

I like the undercoating since they use a lot of salt on the roads around here in the winter, plus it's a little sound deadening.
I also like the fiber guard stuff on the carpet and the leather protectant.
The paint stuff is really just a Teflon based wax, but it holds up pretty well.
The key to all this is; Do you want any of it, and how much they want to charge you for it? There is an absolutely HUGE markup in that stuff. So I would say whether or not you get it from the dealer, or someone else should you decide to get those, depends on what kind of a deal they are willing to give you.
Duallyvette 03-16-2004, 09:46 PM All those "add ons" only have one purpose. BS addon dealer profit. Mostly smoke & mirrors. 20/20 (the TV show) did a story about all these scams.
GPtimes2 03-17-2004, 12:21 AM I think ours come properly undercoated and adding more may plug up drain holes causing problems that you want to avoid (rust).
I've heard of chip resistant paint that is suposed to be softer, but EPA required soft paint just sounds like a scam (I could be wrong). The clear coats they use are pretty good and easy to care for. I think the wax as you dry products are becoming popular (I like them), but only last weeks instead of months. Stay away from silicons, they penatrate the paint and get to the metal making it very dificult to repaint if needed.
Enjoy your new truck!http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big%20Smile.gif

The key to this scam is....they will tell you it is valued at say $1500.00 so when you negotiate down to something less than that your feeling pretty good. Problem is...it is either already on your truck or doesn't exist. As told to me by a friend who left the "new car sales business". Hope this helps! Congrats on your new truck!
Thanks one & all for the insights/advice. Confirms my initial instinct. Again, great site, great folks, and lots of help! Best, Tom
JimWilson 03-17-2004, 06:10 PM I can't recall the last vehicle I had that I didn't get undercoated, so I'm all in favor of that. But some of the rest of that stuff seems like a bit of a stretch.
cricket 03-17-2004, 08:31 PM I hope that bridge from Brooklyn that came with mine was a good deal.
Corsair 03-17-2004, 09:51 PM My .02 cents, if you are truly interested in undercoating and paint protection stop by a reputable body shop and talk to them. I personally do not use the stuff, but we do not have salt on our roads, except on the beach that is. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
