they give you more protection but not enough to protect from chips. I had protective plastic installed on my rocker arms and lower front doors and rear fenders. It is invisible and protects from rock chips. I will do it to all my lifted trucks in the future.

The pocket style flares will give you 1 1/4" more coverage than the factory flares..
