: Low beams turn off

Hey, this just started tonight. As soon as I start my truck my low beams turn on, then switch off and wont come back on. My fog lights still work and so do my high beams. I'm guessing Relay? It just snowed a little here last night so conditions are wet. Also, I just replaced both of my fog lamps last week after my other ones were both broken off. Low beams worked fine up until now though. Any sugguestions? Thanks!

If you turn your headlight switch on does it solve the problem? Could be a quite a few things. The more information you can provide the better.

Nope, if I turn on the switch, there is nothing either except for the fog lights when I turn them on. Just the very first time when you turn the key on they come on for about 2-3 seconds and then go off. Everything else (highs, blinkers, and fog lights) still work.

Just had a look at the schematic. I would say it pretty much has to be your dimmer switch.

I do have the override that runs the low beams when the highs are on as well. Would that have something do to with it? Is the dimmer switch a do-it-yourself type of thing or should I call the dealer?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

Thanks Again!

Are the lows on when the highs are on?

You are using a headlight booster? That changes things. I would start by disconnecting your headlight booster and see if all goes back to normal. Could be a bad relay in the booster harness.

I wouldnt say its a booster, It was just a wiring kit that makes your low beams run when you turn on your highs. My fog lights still turn off when I do this. And, I just went outside and checked again, the Lows do come on when the highs are on but are off just on low. They (the lows) stayed on for about 10 seconds when I first turned it on and had just them on. Then I turned the switch off and tried it again and they came on for 5 sec or so. Turned highs on and then they worked but when I go back to low they are off again.

Thats about all I know...if you have more questions, ask! I'm wondering like you max power if it isnt in the override harness.

Sounds like it might be your dimmer switch. Its a pretty simple circuit and that is about the only thing that it could be IMO. This is an 01 right?

I'd be interested to see how the bypass kit works. If it is easy to remove, remove it first. There are quite a few ways this could be done so without me seeing how it works, this is the easiest way to eliminate the problem. Is it hard to remove?Edited by: Max Power

No, its not hard at all to remove if I remember right. I'll go out and check it out/take it off and get back to ya. And yes, it is an '01. I'll click some Digi pictures and get them up if I can...

PROBLEM SOLVED! At first I went out and made sure they still didnt work. Then I poped off the Drivers side light cuz thats where I had installed the headlight override. Here's what it looked like:

The white and brown wires were spliced into both my low lamp and high lamp. This went to what I thought was a relay. You can already see the problem here. I clipped the wires and then everything worked fine. The relay in the pickup:

After I saw that and everything went to working I pulled out the relay. It was toast:

I dont know what kind of a relay this is or if that is even what it is. I know I dont want another! What are you guys running to get all your lights to come on when on high beams? I bought this cuz it was cheap.....you get what you pay for....

Thanks again for all your help max power and everyone else.

Just 2 wires going into it? if so it is likely an automatic resetting breaker.

Painless wiring makes a kit for 36 dollars out of Jegs. I had one on my 00 worked like a champ. Will be putting it in the 03 tomarrow.

Does it look like the one I had?

This will cost more than 36 bucks but they work fine with more light output as well. Also takes a load off the OEM switch. Good products at caspers, take a look.

You get what you pay for. I've had a Kennedy harness on for two years now. Even had battery acid get on one of the relays, melting it up pretty badly. All still works great.

These types of connectors can be a disaster by themselves in an outdoor environment. I hate to think of how many trailer and vehicle wiring harnesses I have had to repair over the years. I did make very good money however repairing the damage.

Caspers is the way to go, plug and play, installed on my rig in about a half hour and it was the first time.
