I have a friend who is using rubbing alcohol as an additive in his duramax. I told him this was a no no but he dosen't believe me. He is having a problem loosing prime also could this be related or not. What are all the problems this could cause.

Specifically taboo by GM ~ its diminishes any lubrication quality of the fuel on the injectors. Bad, bad badk. I believe the dealers do sample test for alcohol ~ repair will be on his bank acct.

Not to mention the drug store rubbing alcohol is not 100%. It is diluted with WATER. Why would anyone want to put water into the fuel tank?

Maybe he's thinking about a gasser.
I believe most gasoline freeze preventers are concentrated isopropyl alcohyl.

As far as a diesel, as said above, alcohyl is a No No!

Ordinary gas-line antifreeze and water remover (e.g.: "HEET") is 99% pure methanol. But there is a new product, Iso-HEET, designed for use in all 2-cycle and 4-cycle gas and diesel engines, that contains 99% isopropanol and a special additive.

But the highest concentration isopropanol rubbing alcohol is 90%. Ordinary rubbing alcohol is only 70%. There's already too much water in both of these.

I'd avoid even the approved additives unless there's a definite need.

yes, and the cheaper brand rubbing alcohol is 50% isopr. and 50% water. Very Bad......
