What is it? I've never seen it come on except at start up? Is that a low fuel light? If so, I had mine down to 23.6 gallons used (according to the computer) and it never came on....

It's a low fuel.. but it's WAY low... lol.. I have run down about the same and haven't been able to tease that light into coming on... I still carry a 5 gallon in the bed just in case though.

That's not a low fuel light, it's a get out and start walking light!

I can tell you from experience that the light comes on with 28 miles left. find fuel, or start walking as many have said.

Yes, It's a "Diesel Thing".

Mine came on once, definitely a final warning light!

Maybe it is an 03 thing, not just a diesel thing??? I know the one time mine came on, a message on the DIC came on stating low fuel....and then it started beeping at me. I guess it figures three different things will get my attention... I jokingly yelled at it stating I would have loved to have filled up if I could find a station with diesel going through the different towns!! Ahhh memories.

The light works in mine. DIC showed 26 miles left. FYI, it's a 26 gal tank on short beds, 32 ( i think ) on long beds. Either way, if you get the light and bells, you better find some fuel !

Yeah, 26 gallon tank in the short box. I have had the low fuel light come on twice. Both times it was no problem to put in 25 gallons of fuel within one mile of the light coming on. You had better not be towing when that light comes on or you will be walking in about 10-12 miles if you don't have some 'go juice' with you (hasn't happened to me by the way). Ah yes the low fuel light. I have seen it a few times and have called for help twice. That would be for more fuel. The first time the salesman that sold me the truck brought me a five gallon can full. The second time I drove through an entire town, not one station with diesel open. I called GM roadside assistance, of course my mileage was 36,041. Sorry but you are over your mileage. They offered to call me a tow truck, tow trucks don't carry diesel. They offered to call me a taxi, taxis won't let you carry fuel in the vehicle. I was only 1.5 miles from the truckstop on a cold and rainy night. Sucked to be me!

I run mine until the light comes on almost every tank. I show 49-50 miles remaining in the DIC everytime. I have a 2003 CC long box. I've driven over 20 miles a few times once the light came on, so according to the DIC I still had approx 30 miles of fuel left. I usually put in 31-32 gals, so I should have 2-3 gals in the tank if the 34 gal capacity is accurate. I guess each vehicle is different. (My truck has just under 20,000 miles)

On most vehicles it's a "Low Fuel" warning light. On our trucks it's a "You're Outta Fuel, Sucka!" light.

I know, I found out the hard way. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif

Mine came on at about 45 miles on the DIC. I drove another 15 miles to my fuel station and pumped in 32.4 gallons.

So, I would guess it comes on around 2-4 gallons left in the tank.

By the way, has anyone else noticed that have 2004 LB7's that the manual says a long bed tank capacity is 36 gallons, not 34 gal. like everyone else?

If I had plenty of time on my hands, I would run the tank dry just to find out. But I am curious.

I was running low one evening and pumped in 24.5 gallons into my shortbed. No Light ever came one. The DIC seemed to be correct though, stating that I had about 30 miles to empty.

Later...

flhrciblueice,

Thanks, I was beginning to wonder if I had the "special" manual for those that risk death..

I know that for the first 3/4's of the tank the gauge would drop 1/4 for every 9 gallons used, then drop like a stone on the last quarter. Yet, I could never put that much fuel in.

This last fueling was the lowest I ever ran the tank. I want to be able to count on the reserve when we are towing. Good fuel stops on the road are hard to find.

it comes on when there is less than 34 miles left in the tank....I've ran down that low twice(http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif) and both times is came on at that mileage. With my 17 m.p.g that pretty much tells me that there's only 2 gallons seperating driving from using my chevrolegs.

I gather the nearest diesel station was more than the proposed 28 miles away from when the light came on. . . bummer.

Seems obvious to me. The light is set up for the larger tanks. If you have a short bed and see the light you're sucking but the engine isn't cuz there's nothing left to suck! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

I checked my manual this morning. It states that the long bed trucks have a 36 gallon tank.

Now, all we have to do is get brave enough to take her deep into the warning light...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Trust the DIC and drive it. Mine shows over forty miles remaining range every time the light comes on. I've driven it down into single digits when I had to. Squeezed in 35-1/2 gallons. I'm not saying be foolish and push your luck, it is just that you have a good piece of equipment and you ought to be confident in it.

BTW, glad to see that somebody found the tank holds 36 gallons, as I was wondering how I got 35-1/2 in a 34 gallon tank.

Quick story, on my first road trip with my 04, I was towing a friends 24ft car trailer from Florida to NY. The light comes on someplace in the middle of North Carolina so I get off at the next exit. The only station that carried diesel was out of business. I have no choice but to get back on the highway and head to the next exit with my fingers crossed. The next exit was about 12 miles away. I get within sight distance of the exit and the truck shuts off. Now with no power steering, and towing a trailer I coast up the off ramp, look quick and run the stop sign, and cut a right towards the nearest gas station not even knowing if they carried diesel. Pulling into the station I had to cut off a slow moving van and roll up to the only diesel pump in site. I kid you not when I say I never touched the brakes, the truck stopped within a few inches in reach of the stretched fuel hose. Never again, now I stop at 1/4 tank.

Before I leveled my truck (EC SB) the light would consitantly come on with 3 gallons to spare. Milage dependant apon driving conditions. After I leveled the truck ( front to rear) the light now comes on with only 1.5 gallons left in the tank. To close for comfort.

Why I always fill up between half and 3/4.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif On my Fl to Ohio trips I fill up at 400 on the trip odometer, solo and 300 when towing.

I always carry a 5 gallon can of diesel fuel when I'm towing the fifth wheel, it gives me piece of mind if nothing else.
