I was picking up some filters at the Cummins Mid South shop in Kenner La. I walked back in the shop to speak with a friend of mine and saw a F-700 delivery truck being serviced. With the hood up I could see a Cummins 5.9 engine in there. The exact same engine that Dodge was using. I had to ask myself, if the Powerstroke is so good then why didn't Ford put one in the F-700. My friend answered that question by telling me that was a 400hp Cummins 5.9 and the Powerstroke could not handle that kind of power in a truck of that weight. If the Cummins is good enough for a Ford F-700 then is should be fine for a Dodge. Any and all engines made will have a problem sooner of later, you just have to chose what truck you want.

And they scoff when someone posts the pics of the different connecting rods. The 5.9 rod dwarfs the PSD or the D-maxhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif.I like the TALE that Ford salesmen were using and probably still are"Ford owns CumminGs and choose to use the PSD cause it's a superior engine"http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif.How many people fell for that rumor.I know I almost did until I seen a printout directly from Cummins stating that Ford owned less than 10% at one time but has since sold it all back.I'm just talking about the Ford own Cummins thing cause I always knew which engine was SUPERIORhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif...Doug

I totaly agree. I'm happy with my CTD and WE all know who has the superior engine. Cummins did not build the engine for Dodge. Dodge built a truck for the Cummins. The 5.9 has been around for many years. I work in the offshore oil industry and have seen many 5.9B engines in many different applications. Hell Timber Jack logging machines use the 5.9B. Dodge is not the only thing that has the little Cummins.

I agree that the Cummins engine is a strong one, but why is it SO LOUD? With this engine running you could EASILY go through the drive thru line at McD's and order a Big Mac with an Orange drink and come out with a double quarter pounder with cheese and a diet coke.

I have no problems with an engine sounding mean, but someone two lanes over from you can hear it real well. I'd hate to chaek something under the hood with the engine running with headphones on.

I don't own a truck yet but plan to purchase either a Dodge or a Silverado EOY. Does anyone know why the engine is so loud?

Thanks

Aeubank,

You must be talking about the older engines. They had a mechanical injection system and were loud. They also have NOT been used in Dodge trucks for three years. Maybe you missed that?

The new motors use a multiple injection program with some mechanical changes. The are very quiet. VERY QUIET.

You obviously dislike the 'noise'. There are many who call it 'music' and miss the old engines. Like many Harley riders there are those who believe, "loud pipes save lives".

That must be it then. I must have heard an engine that was older or possibly heavily modified (and boy was it jacked up with the 4x4 system).

Thanks

Cummins marine salesman blew into my shop one day with the newer engine in his truck ( not the 600) and I put a decibel meter to my truck and his, mine was louder. To be fair, mine was cold, they're a little louder when cold but it gives you an idea of where the new Cummins engines are in sound.

Noise was a huge factor in my not considering a pre-2003 Dodge. On cold mornings they wake up the whole neighborhood. They're totally different now. They actually have acceleration now too.

As far as I could tell going around to the dealerships the Cummins 600 was the quietest engine out of the three major manufactures. I have a feeling in the future the auto makers will be focusing on how quiet the engine is besides the horse/torque figures.
