Last Summer bought a used set of tires which were mounted on Eagle rims. The center caps that came with them had rust spots on them, which I simply replaced with new chrome caps. Fast forward 6 months..... The new caps look just as rusty as the old ones??? WTF??? Understand that the caps were only $10 each and were made in China (therefore P's OS). Also note that the formerly chrome lug nuts also look like crap.

I suspect there is something going on to accelerate rust formation (dissimilar metals in contact with one another or something like that). We don't salt the roads here, so they have seen only rain and slush not salt.

Any ideas out there on where I can get center caps that won't tarnish? I would prefer something low maintenance even if it means getting a plastic center cap with fake plastic chrome on it. I hate detailing my truck, so don't recommend waxing my caps once a month cause it isn't going to happen. I just can't stand to see that rust on a relatively new truck.

I have pictures but can't seem to get them to load them....

I hate to say it but with the amount of salt it looks like those wheels have seen it's not surprising to see the steel parts are rusting. Does anyone make a stainless steel center cap? That would be something to look into.

Edit: Quick search revealed these (http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=egnsearch.asp&N=115+400077+300491&autoview=sku). Maybe they'll work for you.

IIRC Center line has stainless steel center caps.

a brillo pad will take rust of chrome plated metal objects without harming the finish, ive done it on the chrome bumpers from the older c/k models

Thanks, will try the brillo pads for the near term. Long term, I might just buy a new set and apply a spray overcoat or something to try to slow the rust formation.

Frankly the wheels do look pretty rough and I guess I'm going to have to take them off and buff them out as well. Not a fun job in the winter, especially for one who isn't exactly compulsive about detailing my rig.

It's so darn cold up there that you are freezing the crome right off the cap. :)

You could always go to stock centercaps that are plastic and have the chevy emblem in them. They wouldn't rust.
