: What gauge for oil temp?
Fireman 03-13-2004, 03:25 PM Based on the feedback from a few of the folks here, I have decided to install the following gauges; EGT, Boost and a guage to monitor oil temperature. I am going to get Autometer Lunar series gauges. ...My question is this: Since there is not an actual "oil temp" gauge, would a trans temp gauge work just as well?
I also need to know how and where to install the temp probe. I am looking for the easiest location that will still give accurate readings.
Thanks,
Kevinhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Fireman 03-14-2004, 12:01 AM Anybody?
Terrain Twister 03-14-2004, 12:12 AM There are some oil temp gauges out there but I'll have to look. Don't know about the Autometer but I'm assuming you've checked them out. Give me 5 minutes.
Terrain Twister 03-14-2004, 12:48 AM ISSPRO has one. For mounting I've heard of different spots from tapping th oil pan to using the hole for the drain. Wouldn't recomend that one though. Puts the wires in a dangerouse spot if they get hoked on something and start yanking.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
DinoMax 03-15-2004, 12:59 PM Fireman, I have a Quadzilla Digital Gauge that gives the 3 readings you are interested in. EGT, Oil Temp, and Boost Pressure all appear, and are easy to read & install. There is a spot on the oil filter housing where you can mount a probe for oil temp sensor. Mine came w/ the gauge and screwed right in. I would assume a trans. temp probe would be the same, as far far as the ability to read/send temp data. Here's a pic of my gauge installed in the overhead console.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/4Z3_MVC-005F.JPG

Fireman 03-15-2004, 03:27 PM Thanks guys!
I think I am going to use the trans temp gauge for monitoring my oil temp (simply because the oil temp gauge is not available from Autometer). If I have this figured correctly, which at this point, I think I do, the trans temp scale will be sufficient for oil temps as well. I will install the sender in the port by the oil filter as some of you have recommended.
I hope the installation is easier than the planning!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif If i can get up the nerve to drill the manifold a-la Hoot's method, it should be all down hill from there.
Thanks once again for all the helphttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Bertram65 03-16-2004, 01:12 PM Autometer makes an electric oil temp guage in the phantom line, the PN for the 2 1/16th" is 5747. The sender is 1/8th" NPT with adapters for other common sizes. They now have a differntial temp gauge also, PN 5749. (edit) I believe the probe is the same for both trans temp and oil temp I have both in my truck and the probe was identical, the only difference on the phantom gauge is the writing on the face. Thanks...I figured they were basically the same. I don't really care if my gauge says Trans instead of Oil.
I ordered the setup last night. Next comes the fun part - installing everything.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

GSXRTURBO1 03-16-2004, 02:33 PM Auto Meter makes all kinds of oil temp guages, both electric and mechanical. I have a 2 5/8" Pro series liquid filled mechanical oil temp guage, as well as a 2 1/16" Phantom series mechanical oil temp guage. Edited by: GSXRTURBO1
GSXRTURBO1 03-16-2004, 02:35 PM The "liquid filled" liquid is silicone to help dampen the needle movement. Edited by: GSXRTURBO1

Where can I get this & who installed it? Thanks
DinoMax 03-23-2004, 07:25 PM TNRGreene, the gauge is called a Monster Monitor and is distributed by Quadzilla. I got all the install instructions off the site, and my brother in-law installed it for me. I did not have the the time, and he is a perfectionistQuadzilla (http://www.quadzilla.com) Let me know if you need any more info on the gauge or the install. I also have a few more pic's at the address in my sig. line if you are interested. TNRGreene 03-23-2004, 07:37 PM I went to that site but I am totally lost. Help a DMax brother out a little more.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif I checked out the pics they are a great help. Thanks
TNRGreene 03-23-2004, 07:53 PM Nevermind, it's at quadzillapower.com. Go check quadzilla.com & you'll see why I was way lost...LOL Thanks again

Mac,
What does your oil temp run? The Lunar series doesn't have the "oil temp", only "trans temp", and it reads to 250*. Do you ever see oil temps approaching that? I already have the gauges, so I am hoping 250* will be sufficient.
Thanks,
Kevinhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Mackin 03-23-2004, 10:56 PM I don't have one,sorry my pod is full .... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif
But if I did that's what I'd have ....
Mac
DinoMax 03-24-2004, 07:14 PM TNRGreene, sorry about the bad link, but glad you found it.
Fireman, I know you asked mackin, but I thought this might help. I have NEVER seen Oil Temp hit 200 degrees or above, so you should be fine w/ 250 max on your gauge. I typically see anywhere from 170 to 185 after everything warms up. DinoMaxhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Fireman 03-24-2004, 09:28 PM Thanks DinoMax,
I thought that 200* would be about the upper limit of oil the temp, but when I saw oil gauges that have higher maximum scales than trans temp gauges, I wanted to be sure. I'd feel pretty foolish driving around with a gauge pegged to the max all the time.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif The third gauge for me is mostly an aesthetic thing. I think a triple pod looks more complete than a dual pod, thus the extra temp gauge.
