I just bought an '03 3500 with the Duramax. I'm happy as can be with it so far.
I've been a diesel mechanic in the Army for almost 10 years now, but i really don't have much experience with the Duramax. This looks like the spot to be to learn about it!
I also have a moded '98 Sonoma ZR2 that is now my play truck. The 3500 is going to serve a dual role as the tow vehicle for it and my bass boat.
