: My new LBZ and its MPG
acehi 01-29-2006, 04:42 AM I finally received my LBZ. I flew up to Montana Friday afternoon and picked it up. I hooked up my GPS and reset all the DIC controls to 0. My first 300 miles of driving I went from Montana to Idaho Falls and I drove it in 4-wheel drive for 75 miies of it in the snow. I drove it at all speeds from 55 - 95 and you can't tell you are going that fast. I didn't go past 70 mph in 4wd, but it 2wd I punched it and passed several people. When I filled up the DIC showed 15.1 mpg and I hand calculated 15.0. On the second tank I went from Idaho Falls to Wells, NV and I maintained a speed at 80mph and I got 15.2mpg on DIC and hand calculated. On my 3rd fill-up I went from Wells, NV to Reno and I maintained a speed of 75mph and the 1st 150 miles the DIC showed 15.8 and was maintaining that until I got to Winnemucca, NV and had a 30mph headwind, I kept the speed at 75mph and my DIC slowly worked it way down to 14.4mpg and when I filled up in Reno, I hand calculated 14.48. So, my DIC is very close to the hand calculations. Now, here is the good one. On my last fill-up I went from Reno to Vacaville, CA and I maintained 65 mph, except for going through the pass where I had to put it in 4wd and run it 45mph for 35 miles, but as soon as I was out of the chain control area I kicked it back into 2wd and run it back up to 65mph all the way home and my DIC shows 18.6 on it right now. I have not filled up yet to hand calculate it but from the past 3 they are very close. I never ran the cruise control and I never went below 1/2 tank.
I know, everyone is going to jump in and ask for pictures. I will post them tomorrow. I have been driving the past 2 days and it is now just after midnight and I am going to bed. Just wanted to let everyone know I got my truck (thanks Howard) and how it did.

jimb206 01-29-2006, 08:05 AM I got a 2006 GMC 3500 SLT on Wednesday. When I picked it up it had 7 miles on it and a full tank of fuel. Wed. Thur. and Fri. I drove about 280 miles. All these miles were on rural roads probably averaging 45 miles per hour. But there is some stop and go and braking for curves on these roads. The DIC said the average MPG was 16.2. Yesterday I drove about 300 miles on the interstate and the DIC average MPG (I had reset it to 0) was 20.6 at 65mph. I didn't hand calculate MPG but I doubt the DIC is too far off based on what I have read on this site. I don't drive very slow but I do accelarate fairly slowly. If these numbers are accurate and the MPG go up as I get more miles on the truck I'll very very happy. I'm going to hand calculate the next few tanks.
TurboIndian 01-29-2006, 08:34 AM I'm super happy!!!! all I kept reading here is how bad the mpg was until it was broke in. here are my findings.
picked up the truck with 175 miles on it. 1st tank about 60-70 miles of interstate driving 65-75 mph, towed about 4,500#'s for about 65 miles, 3 - 1/8 mile dragstrip passes:ro), & the rest were around town & local miles but mind you I've been driving this thing hard because it's a new toy. mpg was 15.28.
second tank was only calculated off 144 miles but these miles were interstate with the cruise on 72-76 in the mountains of NC & 20 of these miles were city stop & go traffic. this netted me 16.89 mpg.

congrats on the new truck... i will ordering in the next two weeks.
just wondering, why you went to montana... maby you went llc? ? ?
DIESELMAN75 01-29-2006, 03:02 PM i bet most off the people that get bad MPG drive like crazy or something because how can you only get 11-12MPG other than towing or driveing really fast

Winter blend, 5 to 10 minute warm up, 5 or more stop signs in a 10 mile drive and short non-highway runs are a few ways to get low MPG.
TurboIndian 01-29-2006, 05:49 PM Winter blend, 5 to 10 minute warm up, 5 or more stop signs in a 10 mile drive and short non-highway runs are a few ways to get low MPG.everything but the winter blend is me & I still netted 15.28, & like I said before my driving techniques, slide it sideways around the corners & all.

I spent several months looking around for the truck I really wanted. when the LBZ's finally came out I had my options all picked out and the only thing I was lacking was the dealership that would give me the best price. Here in California there is no way of getting around paying the state taxes which would have been near $4k and the best price I could find anywhere in Northern Cali was $47K, then DMV fees and any type of California emmisions are required if it is ordered here or delivered here. My home is Alaska and there is no taxes up there. In Alaska they raise the prices on vehicles as well because you have no other choice when there are only a few dealerships up there adn they are all owned by the same company. I got online and called several different dealerships, even fleet managers and faxed my options to them and they all sent me their quotes. Then I was referred to Karl Tyler Chevrolet up in Montana and I checked out their website and gave Cody a call. I told him everything I wanted, he gave me his best price, plus he gave me my $500 military rebate, $1000 GM rebate and a little extra. I asked him about the bedliner, AstroStart and undercoating and he gave me a total price of $42,135. For me being in the military, I have the option of purchasing anywhere and still registering it in any state I decide to become a resident. I prefer to stay an Alaskan resident because of the dividend check each year and no taxes and I plan on retiring and moving back up there in the next couple years. Cody in Montana was the best to work with in my opinion over most of the others I had talked to. He is very knowledgable of all the vehicles he sells. I asked him several questions and he answered them straight up and if he did not know, he got the answer. There was no blowing smoke up my a$$. I also enjoyed the showroom floor. Moose heads, Caribou, bear mounts and all kinds of outdoor things. My kind of workplace.
Sorry, I didn't get the photo's up. I spent all day installing the nerf bars, Class V hitch, Air-ride system, rear shocks and changed the differential fluids to Mobile 1. By the time I got that done the sun was going down and the truck needs to be washed after that 1100 mile drive.

rjstronach 01-30-2006, 04:04 AM I also had a great deal of confusion when it came to some of the poor limage reports here on the Place. I ended up buying my 2006 LLY out of state (Nampa, ID) for the same reason you did acehi, the stealers around here like to make the pirce tag look like the vin number. When I drove my truck home from Idaho, I got just over 20 mpg with it. Now when I play around with a heavy foot, the milage takes a dump to around 15. With conservative speeds I get around 17 with a mix of in town and highway driving. i am delighted with with truck and more than satisfied with the MPG.
acehi 02-03-2006, 10:36 PM Here are the photo's. Sorry it took so long, it has been raining and I hate taking pictures of a dirty truck, unless I just got done riding through the mud. :)
