I just bought my first diesel.........heard alot of good about Duramax, but seems sluggish. I have replaced air filter, fuel filter and cleaned MAF. It's a little better, but I'm not getting the pick up I feel it should have. Bone stock.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

I pretty much agree with the weak low end until you build boost. My 2001 is much better with the muffler off. I have no other power adders. So I can see how a bigger exhaust system may not dyno that much higher, but building boost early really makes the truck feel faster on the bottom end. Once you spool it up, they really go. I like to leave from a stop by "setting" the throttle so it shifts around 2200 Rpm.......and the Ally snaps off those nice shifts 1/2/3/4 .....next thing you know, you're doing 65 mph. nice

I mean sluggish all around.........off the line, mid-range and top end. Doesn't seem to ever spool up. An Escort could beat me! Gas mileage is approx. 12.

I would say to have it checked out. There are many things that can effect
power output. Fuel filter, air filter, leaky hoses in the intake system,
stuck waste gate, and of course injector problems, etc.
You covered some of them already, so maybe a trip to a dealer for a
injector balance rate check might help. Do you have a boost gauge?
Is it building boost? Also fill in your sig, so we can see what year and mods
you have. It will help the techs that are here to answer. Good Luck!!!

Brownstown.....

1) You need to fill out your signature so we all know what year truck you have.

2) Is the truck making any odd noises? Blowing white smoke? Just anything out of the ordinary would help us figure it out.

3) I know you're in Michigan...are you close to Holland/Zeeland area? That's where Eric is....

After I made the last post, I have been to 3 dealerships. At the last dealership, they told me it was my injectors were dirty. They cleaned them..........$350 later, that wasn't the problem. No difference!!

I heard about Merchant Automotive in Holland, Michigan and I contacted Eric and set up an appointment to take my truck there. After only being there for 15 minutes, he diagnosed my problem. It was the injector pump. Replaced it.................runs EXCELLENT!!! I couldn't be happier.

A big thanks to the ones on here that suggested I contact him, and a HUGE THANKS TO MERCHANT AUTOMOTIVE.

And the gas mileage improved considerably............it's 18.2 MPG.

Out of curiousity what was the toll on the pump? I would have to look but mine set me back about $1300....... Lots more power........ but has more of a diesel sound @ idle goes away as soon as you give it some pedal.

why would he need to replace the injector pump, was it worn out?? or just one that had a defect?

With regard to the price, yeah, a little less than that. And definitely more of a diesel sound now. Compared to what it was, definitely louder now.

It was putting out less than half the pressure it should.

Worn out? Defective? Don't know, but it was definitely not working right.

Hmmm. What *should* the pressure be, and how do I check it?

i will second that, fuel mileage down to 11 mpg from 18 unloaded.

My buddy has a scanner ( i think mactools) i use it to check the balance rates every 6 months or so. Can "we" use a scanner like this and what are we looking for?. Dealers around here aren't much help. last time i talked with them about this... they gave me the injectors need cleaned story as well.

means... put this thread to the top of the list so someone will answer my question!

And i think the injector pump is only covered to 100k miles. I am at 98,345 by the way and 5 years ends next month.

Are there any other signs of the pump going out or is it just sluggish?

fuel mileage 11mpg unloaded, pilot injection (or lack of) noise sounds more and more like a 7.3. slower spool up. more pronounced jerky pedal. only smokes when cold...i think is normal.

but i don't know if these are signs of the pump going out or not. i have a couple of injectors right at the no-go range, but not out enough for the dealer yet.

i am trying to find the problem. maybe change the fuel filter again, take off the juice and see.

i was hoping to put the scanner on and see if the pump pressure was down, after searching here and finding out that the pumps have corrosion issues along with fuel regulator problems which i have had.

I have a 2002 Duramax, Crew, 2whl drive, all stock but for K/N air filter. It has been cleaned, and still a little sluggish, plus the check engine light comes on and off irregularly. The mechanic's code reader wouldnt read from port. Communication problems. It has 134,000 mi. All obvious items have been checked, i.e filters, leaks, fluid changes. Any help would be nice considereing I really dont want to take to local dealer. THanks

my teck guy would put his computer on my truck, ask my pump for the most pressure, the pump would not deliver so it would go to limp mode. he repeated it several times and checked the vaccum on my pump, it was low so we concluded the pump was bad. put on a new one and fixed it. cost me $1050.00
