: Low Mileage/Fuel Issues?

I know this isn't the normal concern among d-max owners who seem to be above-average as far as putting miles on vehicles, but has anyone had problems or concerns over d-max vehicles that get lightly used?

Of course I've seen more injector-related posts than I care to remember, but I don't recall people talking about bio-related contamination issues with vehicles that don't do high miles and therefore don't turn fuel over a lot.

Talked with my dad who has some experience with larger marine diesels and he was telling me about sludge problems he had with one of the boats.

I have used stanadyne performance formula since we got the '04 lly, but the details do not say a lot about addressing organic contamination. The racor biocide is something it seems you need to buy physically, you can't have that stuff shipped (at least where I was looking). It's also much more concentrated and expensive. Anyone have experience with this stuff?

Anyone have experience with bio-contaminants?

Diesel will support the growth of micro-organisms, especially when stored for long times in tanks and low-use vehicles. It's really prevalent when there is a fuel/water interface in the tank (where the boogers really thrive!) This is a big concern for marine diesels because of their operating environment - always exposed to high humidity. Marine diesels also tend to have larger tanks and more infrequent operation. Our trucks, unless left idle for months at a time, should not have such issues, but we could be susceptible to getting a load of contaminated (or slimey) fuel from a bad fuel source. Unless you've gotten a bad tank or plan on leaving the truck in the barn for 6 months, you shouldn't need biocide.
