BlueOx03 03-11-2004, 09:12 PM Well if anyone out there needs to know why not to buy a Fram filter, stop into your local NAPA. Every one of them I've been in lately has a Fram filter and a NAPA gold filter cut apart in a case showing what a piece of crap they are. You can also check Mdrag's pics, he cut some up as well.

GreenDuramax04 03-11-2004, 09:49 PM I used to run Fram filters in my street/drag car. While on a Sunday cruise I noticed that my oil pressure was a little low. Got it back home and changed the oil. When I took off the filter I heard a clunking sound in it. After taking it apart I saw that the element had falled apart.
After that my oil pressure never was "right". That summer I took the engine apart and I had 2 spun cam bearings and my main bearings did not look too good either.
I've never used Fram again and I still have the engine and it runs great now.

ronbuick 03-12-2004, 05:21 PM Purolator also, and Valvoline filters made by Champion Labs.

srode 03-12-2004, 05:34 PM I used to run them all the time and Fram made good filters. Last time I used one was on my Race bike, to save some change vs the Kawaski filter. When I changed it a while later had found the filter had started collapsing. Never used them since.
STP's are made by Champion, available at Auto Zone. They have the same number as a Fram, but they ARE NOT Fram filters.
Like one poster from the BITOG site said, "That orange wall is in more places than the Devil!"

At $15 each, they were no bargain even if they were top grade filters. You can get Baldwins for a little more than half of that.
flhrciblueice 03-14-2004, 11:26 AM Idle chatter,
I hope you didn't misunderstand me. I haven't used a fram in years. I was making fun of the ebay ad as they said it was the #1 filter.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif As far as filter wrenches go, I haven't needed one in a long time for my trucks until I bought the dmax. I crushed the stock one before I ever got it removed. I personally prefer NAPA(Wix), and I can get them at cost. But, I have purchased some baldwin's after reading the spec's someone listed on another post.
srode 03-14-2004, 11:51 AM No kidding on removal of the stock one first time!!! I don't know if they glued those on or just torque the heck out of them but my filter wrench put some major dents in the factory filter before it finally broke loose! Never seen anything like that before!!!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Idle_Chatter 03-14-2004, 12:33 PM Idle chatter,

Worrywart 03-14-2004, 01:43 PM How about these oil filters, has anyone tried them yet?
The ordering info is a somewhat confusing, but I guess a phone call can fix that.

Does K&N manufactures their own filters or do they have someone else make them? Edited by: Worrywart
cwolfe 03-14-2004, 05:56 PM K&N are Mobile 1 filters. There are a few differances I dont rember exactly what, but they are made by the same people.
Oldman 03-14-2004, 06:50 PM And, Mobil 1 filters are right up there with Wix.
Wheat Farmer 03-15-2004, 09:55 AM Wix Wix Wix Wix !!!!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
RanaExcavating1 03-15-2004, 11:44 AM I have been using Baldwin filters for 20 years. Never had any problems
Cardboard should be used for boxes, not inside a filter as a baffle.
rickles04 03-15-2004, 12:46 PM sure am glad you guys told me this..... i was thinking about buying some of the wally world junk

BlueMaxxxx 03-15-2004, 08:03 PM The Fram fuel filters suck as well. No more fram *&^% on my truck. PERIOD. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
dmaxalliTech 03-15-2004, 11:13 PM The Fram fuel filters suck as well. No more fram *&^% on my truck. PERIOD. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif HEY!!!
Well, maybe the gasser filters suck. I have had VERY good luck with Fram Boxed fuel filters for our trucks
plastic wrapped, sealed, never found any rust in any of them, over 250 so far .... Good enough for mehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
BlueMaxxxx 03-16-2004, 06:57 AM I have had two now with top seals that would not seat properly in the lip. It seems like the roll crimp on top of the filter was not pinched hard enough when they made them. They seem thinner and much lighter than the OEM filters. I'm stickin with others in the future. Maybe I just was not so lucky but Fram is on a roll in the down hill direction. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif

SteveNorCal 03-17-2004, 09:52 PM Anybody know who makes the Fram fuel filter for the Duramax? (Racor?)
Edit: Never mind. I found out Racor does make this filter and MANY others too. Edited by: SteveNorCal
Jeff1 03-18-2004, 02:20 AM I researched oil filters on the WWW and came across a website, ran by a private engineer. This engineer field stripped (disassembled) all the major brands and some lesser known brands of oil filters. What I was surprised about was that there are a few big manufacturers that are making a lot of filters for different brand name companies. Fram was the poorest rated of the filters he examined and tested. Mobil 1, NAPA, Purolator and Baldwin were oil filters that tested very well. The Mobil 1 was extremely robust in build (filter media & enclosure) and was built more than adequately to handle the oil pressures our Duramax's can produce. There were other brands that tested ok, however these 4 stuck in my mind as being the top runners. This was some time ago, and Mobil 1 did not have a filter to fit my 2004 Duramax; however, they did have a filter for the GM 6.2/6.5 which I suppose could be used on our 6.6's, but I wouldn't recommend it without more information. Got kinda windy here, my apologies for making this post so lengthy.
BlueMaxxxx 03-18-2004, 07:11 AM SteveNorCal, Who makes them is a moot point IMO. A lot of companys MAKE products for others but that does not mean they are manufactured to the same specs or that they will have anything in common with the OEM filters. Dont squeeze a Fram fuel filter when you put one on. The metal is so thin it dents like thin aluminum. I have several if any one wants to buy them You can have a deal.
