: Large Nozzle Fueling
JMPDMax 03-09-2004, 11:45 PM I found the following on the NHTSA site. Do any of the techs on this board have any more information???

NoWake200 03-10-2004, 10:56 AM What is this? Is it a fix or just a report that the filler on our trucks suck?
Minn-Kota 03-10-2004, 11:09 AM What is this? Is it a fix or just a report that the filler on our trucks suck?
No kidding. I was at a pump the other day when a new Powerstroke pulled beside a high flow pump. I asked if it fit and he said yep. He couldn't believe that mine wouldn't allow the large nozzle and said it really fills fast on his. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Down.gif I guess they have that goin' for them.
matt m 03-10-2004, 12:03 PM do they even have small nozzles at truck stops?
Kendall69 03-10-2004, 12:16 PM I stopped at Flying J and they were backed up 6 deep on the only "auto" diesel pump so I pulled over to the Big boys side, and sure enough they had a small nozzle.
tundracamper 03-10-2004, 01:32 PM Do commerical diesel trucks have the same "filtering" requirement as our trucks? This question is out of ignorance. I know that my local truck stop has an external filter on the auto lane that is not present on the big truck pumps. Perhaps it's just for looks. Can one "assume" that the truck lane fuel goes through the same filters as the auto lane diesel?
I've read elsewhere that the 04 filler will accomodate a big nozzle. Can we order those and replace older fillers?
wakeboarder 03-10-2004, 01:37 PM The big nozzle fits in mine just fine but I can't run it about half throttle.
JMPDMax 03-10-2004, 03:41 PM I was hoping that one of the techs on this forum would see this post and give us official word on the fill neck. From the looks of it GM has issued (or will soon be issuing) a TSB.

dmaxalliTech 03-10-2004, 04:21 PM I ran the numbers listed and they dont look like typical format nor do they come up to anything. I know that the LLY guys ( i think anyways) can fill with big nozzles. But, they have an extra vent allowing it. Sending unit is different as is the location in the tank. Also the filler neck is different
Turfmower 03-10-2004, 05:05 PM I can fill with big nozzle on my 03 chassis. you might able to order the fill neck for a Chassis cab
wakeboarder 03-11-2004, 09:02 AM They mite have changed it on the 03's.
I fill with a big nozzle but I have to hold it up the whole time and can't get it to engage the first notch.
A real pain but it does fill relatively fast.
wakeboarder 03-11-2004, 09:37 AM Same here. It still fills alot faster than regular though.
My 2004 LLY handles the big boy pumps just fine. It came right from the factory with the big filler neck. Put the pump on high, and the truck is filled up VERY fast. He he, to bad for you guys with older truckshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif. Seems pretty dumb that they would even put a small filler opening on any diesel equiped vehicle.

No kidding!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif I spent $130 for the TransferFlow and I am still not 100% happy with the fuel filling of my truck.
This I would think would be a NO BRAINER!!!!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
OK I am done.....I'll step away from the 'soap box'.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
tophog 03-11-2004, 11:53 PM The slow fill is fine with me ... gives me time to check the diesel level in crankcase and clean the dirt out of the intake tube. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
CRUSHER 03-12-2004, 03:39 AM OOUUUUUUCCCCHHHHH tophog that hurts!----LOL---- Phil
dmaxscott 03-12-2004, 08:41 AM I had the transfer flow on my 2001 and didn't bother getting it for the 2002. It put more diesel on the side of the truck then OEM did. I just have to fill slow when using the big rig pump.
Sure wish there was an option out there, or more options.
Durabill 03-12-2004, 09:14 AM I remember a thread on this web site that lists GM part numbers from a larger truck that will work on a 2500HD that will give a bigger fill pipe that will work well.

It does not work, I tried it. Now I have $45 filler that can be used as a paper weight.
The filler(GMs fo the 4500s) is just like the Fords and TransferFlow, it uses a fill vent that is on the outside of the fill tube. Then is goes back into the tank for venting(fill). This gives you more area on the inside of the fill tube for FUEL. I want to check out the LLYs and see if it is the same set up.
The TransferFlow works better but it is not a true fix to the problem. I think the angle of the fill tube is to much. The pump will always click off until the handle is in the correct possition.
mnstr_fx 03-12-2004, 12:15 PM Does anyone have pictures of the LLY filler neck???? I remember the thread talking about what was going to be the fix, but was never sure what it looked like.
I've got the Transfer Flow neck and I twist the nozzle counter clockwise about 30 degrees when filling to get it to take max flow. Learned this at a massage parlor overseas...
plrod 03-13-2004, 12:53 PM I fill with a big nozzle but I have to hold it up the whole time and can't get it to engage the first notch.

Ditto; my 04 doesn't accept the big nozzle, filled it once this way and prefer the smaller nozzle and just set it on auto.
rickles04 03-14-2004, 07:29 PM my 03 dont unless ya wanna smell like diesel
Kennedy 03-14-2004, 08:13 PM Just FYI, most of the big pumps do NOT have filters in order to throughput more gallons.
Talked to a pump svc shop recently, and of the local ones that he services, only the small pumps have filters.
Kwik Trip typically has NONE...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
tundracamper 03-15-2004, 09:09 AM ... know that my local truck stop has an external filter on the auto lane that is not present on the big truck pumps. ..Can one "assume" that the truck lane fuel goes through the same filters as the auto lane diesel?
So is the answer to my question "No?"
TCosgrove 03-15-2004, 04:52 PM My 2004 GMC accepts the large nozzle with no problems at all. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif however when it starts to get close to what i think is going to be the cut off point I put my hand on it and slow it down manually. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
I also keep a box oh rubber hospital gloves in the trk. so I don't get fuel on my hands.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif Lord knows i don't want to lose that New Truck Smell just yet. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Kennedy 03-15-2004, 05:37 PM Irregardless, they are typically only 30 micron units, but even a 30 micron is better than none, and should get SOME of the small stuff...
CRUSHER 03-16-2004, 06:15 AM The fuel stop I use 99% of the time has a external filter on the small hose pump stamped "10 micron particle filter". I told the owner that I'd like to see this filter changed on a frequent basis. He has put on a new one and knows I'm watching to see when it's changed again. In return he gets most all of my business ( both gas and diesel). He said he fully understands my desire for clean fuel and thanked me for buying my fuel from him. He sells a LOT of fuel. I wonder why?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif----------Later------------Phil
