I'm looking seriously at an '02 GMC 2500 D/A. The only problemis that the truck has 72,000 miles on it. Anyone care to share thoughts on buying this rig. It seems to be in good shape, with nothing noticed on the initial test drive.

Thanks,

I'd get one of the GM Techs on the site to run the VIN to check maintenance history.

I would just get a new one. They have some sweet deals going on right now and probably wouldnt be a whole bunch more to get a new one.

jayc,

I've got an 02 D/A. No major problems. I have the "tick", streeing wheel rattle and something is funky with my brakes(but I don't think the brakes are specific to year). I get on avg. of 18.4 mpg unloaded with about 60% hiway and 40% city driving. I do live in Kalifornia where there exists an EGR and catalytic convertor on all 02 and newer diesels, to keep the EPA happy. So far it's been a great truck, except for the brake issue. It has most of the quirks of the 01's out of it, like tranny shifting issues while on cruise control. Any other questions, just ask. New one would be nice, but it's all about how many green backs you can drop. Later

It's the notorious tick at idle. It sounds like an old school typewritter. I forgot exactly what GM said it was, but quite a few 01-03 Dmaxers have it and it's nothing to be alarmed about, which is the most recent word from the general.

Thanks LADAX for your input on your truck. I appreciate everyone else's suggestions and will probably make my decision today.

Well other than potential injector issues - which are not necessarily better on a truck right off the showroom floor - its the usual. If GM did the service, look at the history. Have a look at the tranny fluid for discolouration or smell - look at the the type of fuel and oil filters, and look at buying extended drivetrain warranty.

My 02 has not given me problems other than an airbag issue causing the horn to malfuntion - and mine has the tick. Mine only has 35,000 miles though.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifWell, I went ahead and did it! I bought the truck yesterday and will pick it up on Wednesday after they do some minor repairs and put in the spray in bedliner.

Congrats. You got the "good looking" one. I still can't get use the the china-man-on-steroids look of the '03 and '04's.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Nick

Now if I can just figure out which toys to buy for the new truck. It's got just about everything on the interior that I could want. I don't know whether I want to soup it up right away, have to get used to it first, then Edge/Attitude, who knows what else.
