: anyone with a banks monster exhaust want a louder muffler?

I bought the DPPI 4" 409 SS exhaust for my truck which is a nice kit looks and fits great but the muffler is too LOUD and I haven't even towed with it yet. The muffler has a 24" body and is 30" long overall. It is made out of 304 SS and is reversable (louvers inside). If anyone with a 4" Banks monster exhaust wants a louder muffer I'd be willing to trade or buy one from someone who put a straightpipe on their truck instead of the Banks muffler.Edited by: mtomac

Mike,

I also have the DPPI 4" system (aluminized). Very easy install nice quality but I agree it could be a little quieter. I would also like to make a change to a different muffler. The wife will no longer get in the truckhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Broken Heart.gif!

The way I see it the limiting factor is the length of the muffler you can fit in its place. I thought of adding a Donaldson resonator. But then again I have been thinking about it for about 8 months. With the windows up I thought about it less. But summer is around the corner!

Lets us know what you end up with

How much louder is it compaired to the flowmaster? I've been thinking about the 4' flowmaster system for my truck.

Mike if it will fit the Banks kit, and you can wait until the next Grand Rapids get-to-gether. I will trade you. Let me know! It is no big deal either way.

Dmax affair, its loud enough I'm considering putting my stock 3.5" exhaust and Flowmaster muffler back on.

HDmax, how long is the body on the banks muffler and how long is it overall ?

I just installed a Summit exhaust, and it is too quite. No drone in the cab at all. It needs to be straight piped. My old straight piped stock system was very quite in the cab until I added a 5" tailpipe that exited 90° from the bedside instead of pointed out at an angle. I will have to wait until it gets above freezing so I can cruise with the windows down before I straight pipe it.

Mike Tomac,

The Banks muffler for the CC/SB is 28" overall; 21" long body with 3.5" long inlet and outlet tubes. Have you priced just the muffler through Banks?

Wow, the Summit Exhaust too quiet?? Obviously different ears!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
I also have the Summit Exhaust system on my truck but it was too loud for me and took it off for a few months. I just recently reinstalled the system, but put a Magnaflow in place of the "glasspack" summit gives and it is much better, but still noisy. It is louder than stock on acceleration, but cruising seems tame. Only around 1900 rpms does it get a bit too intrusive in the cab. Still waiting for the first tow with the exhaust system to see what note it puts out under load. If it is too loud, its going into the classifieds as I am tired of f'in with it. Wish there was a quieter way to obtain 100-200 degree drop in EGT's while towing......

I guess some of us have come to enjoy the quietness of the dmax, both the engine and the exhaust and try to keep it as close as possible. Oh well, to each his own.

The Magnaflow muffler was 30" overall, 24" body. Part number was 12772.Edited by: 4x4man

Banks drone is at 15-1700 RPM. 1600 being the worst. However still not bad.

Believe it or not but adjusting the Banks tip, in or out makes a noticable difference in regards to interior noise.

GMCSLEHD, thanks for the measurements. The banks muffler is only 2" shorter than the DPPI muffler. Do they use the same muffler for all cab configurations? BTW Banks wants just over $310 for just the muffler including shipping.

Bronco, I've played with the location of the tip (in and out) and even took it off. It doesn't seem to make a difference. The muffler is just too loud for me.Edited by: mtomac

Hey Mtomac,

The Banks is not a bad choice. It does have a slight in cab drone at 1600RPM. Otherwise it sounds good. Very quite under constant throttle. Loud under acceleration. This Monster tip in the Banks sytem does allow a little fine tuning. Some probally wont like this but alot of times my truck sounds like a very tough gasser!

BTW, from what Banks tells me, the drone is the worst on extended cab short beds??Edited by: Bronco

Dual exaust yes. Two mufflers no.

mtomac,

Here is another idea. IF you have enough room, would you want to add a resonator? This may quiet down your exhaust enough. The following link shows a 4" resonator. Also, check out the clamps.

I think they can be installed pre or post muffler.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Install a 4" Dynomax race magnum in the piece often called the "downpipe". 2 straight through mufflers shouldn't be much of a restriction.

Looks like it is 21 1/4" body and 28" over all. Don`t think it will work without adjusting the tailpipe.

The Summit is louder then the Banks! At least in Grand Rapids, Michigan.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I must be going deaf. Alot of GN owners complain about drone, and are adding mufflers in place of the cat. I run an 3" duel system with no mufflers at all, and love it. I got a chance to drive the Duramax today with the windows down, and it is loud outside. I might have to keep the muffler.

How does a Flowmaster sound on a Duramax? Does it have the Flowmaster hollow sound like on gassers? I was thinking about adding a 1 chamber Flowmaster instead of the glasspack to get a deep hollow roar like a Cummins.

Rich Gillett In SLC has a Banks system on his 02 D/A and also said it was just TOO LOUD. He installed an Aeroturbine in front of the banks, in a "Stacked" configuration. It is now just a little louder than stock but has a deap throaty sound to it. It sounds really good now.

He is the owner of Gillett Diesel Service. 800-638-4679

If my new exhaust has the "Drone" I will use one. I'll just have to see how it sounds first. At least it is an option for those of us who like it on the quiet side.

Hello Mtowmac,

In an earlyer post I stated the Banks Monter exaust sounded like a very tough gasser. This statement was not exactly true. When i am in the truck with all of the windows closed, it does soundlike a gasser from the inside of the truck. However from the outside it is not even close. It was anice day today and on my way home from work I had all of the windows open. I was leaving a stop light and in an area that had alot of buildings on both sides. This gave me areal good chance to hear what was going on. It still sounds tuff, but nothing like a gasser from the outside. if you do get a BANKS muffler just besure to get a newer one. I beleive about 6 motnhs ago they changed the design. The new ones are polished on the out side and on the inside they have a true 4" opening that necks down to 3.5" . This was added to reduce droan and give a better over all sound.

If you want it to sound like a Big Block gasser....get Kennedy's 4/5".....sounds evil ideling.....quiet inside while cruising.....BUT the neighbors will hear you.

Bronco, I am pretty sure the new Banks muffler, even though Banks claimed there was nothing different about it when people were trying to swap for the new one, has an added chamber inside to drop the drone - larger not smaller. It is definetly quieter, kind of muffled sounding....the older one sounds better IMO....but a bit louder.

Look to Donaldson......they have a big variety.Edited by: BIG DIPPER

I have the 4" dual SS kit and think it sounds great. Not too loud to too quiet. It kinda sounds like a gasser. Very nice deep tone.

With any kit the tail pipe and tip placement and angle is very important. If your angle your tip a certain way it will direct the sound behind you. If its at more of a 90 deg. angle the sound will reflect from car and other things right to the cab of your truck.

Just put 4in BANKS system on, I dont know how you hear a drone. Its quiet till you want to make some noise, just step on it a little. It hurt my milage a little because I cant stay out of it, I think the combination of sounds is really neat. Edited by: BRUCE

Hello Big Dipper,

Glad you posted the picture. That is exactly what I was trying to say. Must have got my words tied up. I have the new style, since I only ordered my kit a couple of months ago. I looked inside the muffler where the packing and louvers are and could see the larger opening that went down to the smaller size. It sound good to me!

BTW the droan is at 1600RPM and is more noticable on extended cab short beds, due to muffer location in relation to the cab. It is interior resonace that you are hearing. Just come ride with me in my Bronco, I have the metal hard top and dual 3" original style Flow Master mufflers. You can get that baby buzzin inside. Right around 2600RPM it sounds like you are inside a speaker box. Somethin to due with the exaust tip note matching the interior of the muffler note and the interior of your cab. Resonace, never the less.

Bronco and Big Dipper,

Your correct about the Banks muffler design. When at the LA Dyno event on Feb 21, I asked Peter Treydte (PeterT) of Banks about their change in muffler design. He stated they made a change to reduce some of the drone. He described exactly what is pictured in the post by Big Dipper above. A 4 inch inlet expanding out immediately to about a 5-6 inch cavity then going back to a 4 inchs through the remainder of the muffler.

I'm sold - been surfing these boards for a couple of weeks wondering what exhaust to get and if the Monster Exhaust was a good bang for the buck. I'll go and purchase one as soon as I get back to the US on Friday - can't wait! Sounds like the exact thing I've been looking for.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
