: Best road grime and tar remover?
SonnyBear 03-08-2004, 09:14 AM Just finished detailing my new rig and discovered some very nasty grime and tar spots on the lower panels. I used my trusty turtle wax bug and tar remover. It works, but I am concerned about long term use because it is a petroleum by-product. Anyone use some other brand or cleaner that works really well?
Mackin 03-08-2004, 09:21 AM Wd-40 as an alternative ...

dmaxalliTech 03-08-2004, 10:31 AM i use laquar thinner. It will take the wax off also, so you will need to reapply some wax if you choose, but it works like a charm and no long term effects. NO, it doesnt hurt the finish like some of you are thinking
HD-Nate 03-08-2004, 12:22 PM 3-M Adhesive Remover is absolutely the best IMHO.
Have you Clay Barred your paint yet? Don’t put an ounce of wax or polish on until you do. I makes a world of difference.
[EDIT]:
Colton, I see you have a Summit White, you need to go to www.zainostore.com (http://www.zainostore.com) and look at their products. Their products are optically perfect (clear) and will not dull your white like Carnauba based wax’s will. The wax’s will eventually yellow your white.
All my other vehicles are White including my last truck, it made a big difference when I went to Zaino.
Good luck.Edited by: HD-Nate
Mackin 03-08-2004, 01:27 PM Why not Prepsol instead of lacquer thinner ??

HD-Nate 03-08-2004, 05:11 PM Clay bar?
OH YA!!!
You would not believe the contamination and rail dust that is in your paint on a brand new car/truck.
I clay barred mine and put 3 coats of Zaino the first week I had the truck.
I also own an Arctic White C5 Corvette that is my wifes daily driver with 50,000 miles on her. So far just this year alone I have taken 1st place "Best of Show" at the local World of Wheels Show and 3rd place just this weekend at an outdoor show out of town. The two that beat me were show "only" cars that never see the street.
Every Judge sheet comments on the "outstanding paint and shine" the Vette has and its all due to taking the paint down to a perfectly smooth surface and laying down 3-4 coats of Zaino polish over it.
Go to the site I linked above and look at their tips and trick section.
There are several other Zaino user on this site also, TxDoc being one of them and his is white also.
[edit] Just for an FYI.......I own no Zaino stock and make nothing off anything he sells. Its just a great product and just letting you know!Edited by: HD-Nate

I want to try the 3M product. Did you buy it around here locally? I will also try the Zaino and clay bar.
Thanks.
Hoser805 03-09-2004, 04:25 AM What also works good is whats called a bug sponge. It's a small sponge wrapped in a mesh/webbing?? You can find them at most auto parts stores just dip in your car soap and they break off most grime with minimal effort. They work good around the bottom fenders, front bumper and side mirrors.

NoWake200 03-09-2004, 10:04 AM Wally World has the 3M...it is in a small black can. I works great.
WD40 Works great also! But I have noticed if the tar has been on the paint for a long time and is not fresh it does not work as good.
I drove through fresh tar and sand once....I do not get it!!! They really do not know how to fix roads in the Mid West without F'ing up your ride. After I went postal and called the Il DOT and filed a complant I went home put some water on the paint, then used the WD40 all the tar just softened up and disolved(?). I did it about three time to go over the spots I missed but it really did the trick.
I HATE TAR!!!!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
My wife will tell you I have been know to turn around if the MO DOT is working on the road that is ahead of me. I find another way to go! Even if it means going back homehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Try Wal Mart like NoWake suggested or the Parts America store (?)(the old Western Auto) on 152 & 291 next to Feldmans I think has it.
If not, most all NAPA and automotive paint suppy stores carry it.
If you dont mind what part of Liberty do you live in? I have several friends in Liberty. I live in Independence but work up at the Airport for American (old TWA) so I drive 291 everyday through Liberty.
Heartbeat Hauler 03-09-2004, 02:09 PM Local detail shop does a great job! 100 bucks and she's brand new again....I know I'm lazy...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
