Is the block heater supposed to HUM? This is my first vehicle w/ a heater and when I plugged it in, it started humming. I don't want to blow anything up if this is not the way it is supposed to be.

Don't worry, they all do.

Depends on how loud of a hum, I can't really hear anything out of mine but if you get close enuf I guess you could hear something.

Yes, this is normal. By the sound it makes I'm "assuming" that the Block heater may also have a small water pump in it to circulate the coolant thru the block. Mine also makes a "humming" sound.

No water pump in use with the block heater.

It's just an imersion coil type of heater.

There might be some circulation by way of convection currents from the hot water rising being replaced by some cooler water, don't think it's hot enough to open the thermostat though.
