SaguaroKid 01-15-2006, 08:07 PM Great idea.
TheBac 01-15-2006, 08:14 PM Excellent Idea, Eric!
Minn-Kota 01-15-2006, 08:17 PM You're making it waaay too easy for me to spend money with this deal. Half of the problem with a tranny upgrade is my location. Buying a kit is the easy part, finding someone to do the install around here....well, that's another story. Although just the other night I did a mapquest to Holland, MI. ;) My folks took the ferry across Lake Michigan this summer and that gave me another option to cut down on the distance. Maybe someday!
GMC2500HD 01-15-2006, 08:24 PM This is an excellent idea. Good thinking Eric..
C.A.P 01-15-2006, 08:31 PM Excellent Idea, Eric!
:iamwithst I thought it was pronounced theee- back ):h ):h
Max Power 01-15-2006, 08:34 PM Good for you Eric. Keep up the great work!
dmaxalliTech 01-15-2006, 08:59 PM It only makes sense IMO. I've thought of doing it for a while and if the interest is there, I'll even go as far as having built units on hand for immediate shipment. Still getting everything figured out on paper for warranty and stuff, but I'm glad the idea is well recieved.
This could save you some time on the phone!!

Trust me folks, this is THE way to go. Before this thread was even mentioned here's how it went for me:
I recently lost my tranny to a cracked adaptor case and was stuck looking for a local shop (Kentucky) but with no luck. I had a shop to remove and replace but not rebuild. So I contacted Eric (having heard of his expertise on here) about getting me a SCIII with the intention of shipping him my trans to him, having him build it, then sending it back to me. I was floored when Eric told me he would build me an SCIII trans, ship it to me (had the torque converter and brace shipped directly from SC) and then arrange for the pick up of my trashed tranny once it was loaded and ready to ship. I'm telling you, I did nothing but tell Eric what I wanted and he orchestrated it all. He took care of arranging shipping of everything and even had me a trans on time (less than 3 days from order of parts to shipment of trans) to make it on an out of town trip to FL.
I absolutely could not have asked for better service. Eric Merchant of Merchant Automotive was an absolute pleasure to work with and I would recommend his service to ANY ONE looking to do a tranny upgrade (and any other performance upgrade).
Two thumbs up Eric, Thanks bud.

TheBac 01-15-2006, 11:24 PM Don't you kinda wish he would have had this idea a week ago, Ben????
DURAtotheMAX 01-15-2006, 11:30 PM that depends how well tomorrow goes!!:) Everyone cross your fingers...I triple checked the orientation of all those pesky bearings tho, so I should be fine...

I thought you had it all back together and in?
TheBac 01-16-2006, 12:00 AM He does...I just kept ragging him about those....
Eric, you can't sell a trans without a name. We got the Al-ien trans., the Frankie trans.,........hmmmm
1. Godzilla trans!!!

Might not work......
http://www.massdiesel.com/ sells DTT transmissions. Someone could mistake M.A.S.S. for them.
Could get confusing if someone thinks it came from there instead of Eric,... I mean GmDieseltech.com, or Dmaxallitech, or Merchant Automotive. ):h
DURAtotheMAX 01-16-2006, 08:53 AM its not in the truck yet...thats gonna happen today

They do?!?! Man you Midwest guys got all the good info....:D :p:
duramax 2001 01-16-2006, 11:02 AM I will be looking into one of these tranny's later this year! Eric is thinking right! I hope he will allow the average guy to install it without warranty issues. I like the thought of having the trans built right and installing it myself.:grd:
LTChip 01-16-2006, 01:59 PM So let me get this straight....
If you want something akin to a Level 3 but don't trust any locals to be doing surgery inside your trans then you:
Order one from Eric
He ships you the new trans complete
You install it yourself
He sends for your old trans
Now you have a Level 3 with a warranty in your truck?!
Beautiful!
Couple of questions....
Would the trans be an actual Level 3 Suncoast or ATS or other brand? Or are we talking a custom trans?
What is involved with swapping the trans? Special tools or skills needed? Time for a novice? Risks? Heavy lifting involved?
Would it be possible to have the trans shipped to a local shop that I would trust to do the swap? (Given that I think heavy lifting is not an option for me with the condition of my back).
Sounds like a winning proposal to me.
LTChip 01-16-2006, 02:05 PM Is there a really good step by step (with photos) tranny swap “how to” thread? (If not we will be needing one methinks).
What about shipping with a DVD showing exactly how to do the swap? (or selling this as an extra for the novice like me who would need the extra idiot-proof instruction).?
DURAtotheMAX 01-16-2006, 02:30 PM As I understand it, removal and replacement of the tranny isnt technically complicated or "hard"...what does make it hard tho is the sheer size and weight of the Allison. Thats why I had a reputable local shop do R&R and I did the rebuild...
Just dont drop it if you are doing R&R yourself!! (I would not want to find out what happends when you drop an Ally)

LTChip 01-16-2006, 03:47 PM I'll get some quotes for R&R.
I'd love the satisfaction of DIY but would not want to risk it. What does a tranny jack cost anyway?
Wasted Income 01-16-2006, 05:01 PM How does this compare in price to driving up to Holland for Ally surgery?
Suncoast 3 vs. Suncoast 3?
dmaxalliTech 01-16-2006, 06:52 PM Looks like some good response to this based on my suddenly full PM box. Replies are kind of vague, just trying to keep up on all of it.
NODMAX 01-16-2006, 07:00 PM Trans. shops usually get about 8 hours for R&R of a trans. So multiply that by thier labor rate...
IBDMAX'IN 01-16-2006, 07:41 PM I think that Eric rocks!!! wouldn't support him if he was anything less then the best!! :ro) :ro)
Mackin 01-16-2006, 08:01 PM I'll get some quotes for R&R.

The prices very from a couple hundred up.You'll need one with a tilt bed forsure.
This is a nice unit and fair price.

I did mine in the garage. I rented a floor style tranny jack from the local rental shop, $80.00 for 7 days. I did the R&R and rebuild myself. For just R&R, you should be able to do it in a weekend no problem. Took me 5 hours to remove and 4 hours to install. That was my first attempt at an allison.
White Duramax 01-16-2006, 09:43 PM Any tranny shop should be able to pull the trans and put it back in, in no longer than 3 hours. Less for a 2wd.
LTChip 01-16-2006, 11:52 PM I need to think on this. Renting the jack was something I had not thought of. Still though for the $300-500 it would cost from a shop, I may just decide that my time is worth at least that.
dirtyedge 01-17-2006, 11:58 AM For anyone trying to tackle an Allison make sure you have the correct equipment before you start. I have never personally done the R&R on an allison but on many other trannies.
You will need to get the truck way up in the air either with jack stands or with a hoist and then use a good tranny jack whether it is a floor model or a hoist model.
Now that I have my own hoist I will be doing all of my tranny work with my floor tranny jack and then lifting the truck up and out of the way.
I just feel safer with parts that heavy only 2' from the ground instead of 6'.
Hope this helps.
This is a great idea that Eric has but make sure you have the experience and equipment before you consider tackling a job this big.
IdahoRob 01-17-2006, 02:40 PM Truck does have to come up in the air quite a bit. Bell housing is huge and needs to roll out under the frame/torsion bar area. I needed 2'6" clearence to roll my tranny out.
Other than a adjustable tranny jack, I did the R&R with a floor jack, jack stands, and normal tools. It was my first time. Not a big deal, but work slowly and surely.
I'm R&R'ing my tranny again this winter, and will be doing it myself in my garage again. So it couldn't have been to bad.
tmboughton5 01-17-2006, 03:58 PM Just wondering. I am assuming it will but will the Suncoast III handle the Edge on 5 without problems and how much extra HP will it take.
LTChip 01-17-2006, 05:22 PM Do a search on Casper - that is a Level III SC truck I think.
Basically you'd be fine even on Level 5 with a Hot Juice IMO.
OneTALLGMC96 01-17-2006, 06:49 PM Pat is running a Stage III and posting 12 second 1/4's on the gas, but there are lots of different stage III out there. Talk to Eric of Mike L. about it if you are unsure, but having a built trans is not a sure thing that will never break. Sorry, I'm done now!!
Mackin 01-17-2006, 06:58 PM IINM
Mcrats Casper has a MikeL Franky and Kats ride BigBlue has the Suncoast III.
Correct me if I'm wrong

Right on Mac.
LTChip 01-18-2006, 12:08 AM You guys would know. I was sure that there were some pretty high hp rigs running a III though and I agree - built trans is no guarantee but in general, if you are only going to play on the street with a Edge Juice (or even HJ) - a III should suit fine - or am I wrong there?
Mackin 01-18-2006, 06:56 AM A Suncoast III would fit the bill nicely
