In case anyone was interested in my 04 DUramax issues @ roughly 2800 miles. #2 piston is in pieces and broken rocker arm. Lots of metal fell out the bottom of the engine. New engine should be in Tuesday or Wednesday and back on the road friday. I hope. This has been a miserable 3 weeks. Thanks again to Dmaxallitech for his help. Edited by: rpbdawg

So much for zero defects per billion. The japanese have a motto on building things. Ours is defects per 1000 and theirs is defects per billion.

rpbdawg,

Your sig notes a number of mods, how did the warranty thing go? You may have posted about the problems before, but if so, I missed it.

PC is incorrect. My company makes parts for GM (formerly GM plant) as well as Toyota and both use PPM (parts per million). In fact Toyota awards its suppliers that achieve zero PPM.

rpbdawg- is it an LLY or LB7? Not that it matters but I'm just curious.

No problem I removed everything but exhaust when truck went in.

LB7

Actually, it has to be a LB7 as they do not make any of those items for the LLY motor YET.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif All of the internal components that failed him are the same for both engines, so it could happen to any of us! I just rolled 2200 miles on my truck.

What the H*LL makes a motor come apart like that anyways??? I wonder if you sucked a bolt in from somewhere? Was there a lot of "pinging" when she let loose??? Maybe a valve came apart(keeper broke) and shot into the piston, broke and the valve shaft got pushed back into the rocker, while the valve head stayed with the piston and "busted" it up. Weird stuff!

They start over with the warrenty with that new motor don't they? I guess you didn't have too many miles any ways.

What engine is he going to get though? Does he get the LLY now? If so then all the money he has tied up in extra's will be wasted.

Who knows what caused it but it had to be a freak thing. It's quite uncommon for the block/rotating assy to fail in these motors.

Could have been a bad component that got by or missed bolt torque. Who knows. Certainly nothing to get bent out of shape about unless it was your truck..... and I sympathize.

We've seen these engines take some outrageous abuse and hold together just fine. The guys in the Power and Performance forum can attest to that.

I am only frustrated because it is mine. We have done much more to the other trucks to get them running in the low 12's and have 0 problems(knock on wood). They think the turbo messed up and cooke dthe motor is what I was told by the dealer last night(neighbor).

As for the motor, they are almost positive I am getting another LB7. They are kinda confused by the whole process themselves. They have never had to replace the whole engine because of failure.

I wonder if there are any provisions for converting an LB7 to the LLY?

As I understand it, the LLY has a totally different Delphi 32 bit ECM and different programming. That's why it's taking the aftermarket programmers awhile to come up with the performance stuff if I understand what I'm getting from a couple of them.

You also have the TCM which while I don't know if it's a completely different box, it does have the programming for the Allison changes that all '04 models have, but is not functional for the LB7. And who knows about possible harness changes?

Complicated question at best, hope you get it back in a reasonable time frame.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

Next time you have warranty issues with aftermarket products, remember posts like this one.......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif

Just to clarify, this motor had nothing on it that would get it to even the low 13's. It was quick for what it had but nothing extreme like most have on their trucks. It was more freak than anything. The trucks running low 12's are still fine.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Zeeb mentioned something about all the 04's having the Allison changes... what are these changes and do they apply for the 04' LB7 engines? Just curious because I have an 04' with the LB7 and was wondering if the changes or upgrades were the same as the 04's with the LLY.

Well that's a good start, but not quite the whole story. The hardware Eric mentions is in all the Allisons for '04, but the stuff is only functional in the 8.1 gasser and the LLY due to programming changes in the TCM.

That's according to GM. There's more information floating around the site about it, but it's getting a little late for me to go looking for it. If you don't find it by tomorrow, I'll see if I can locate a thread for you.

edit info:

Okay I found a thread that has an entry from GMCSID, it's about the eighth entry on this thread, with the TSB by GM regarding the changes and the fact that the new hardware does not function with the LB7 engines:

http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4216&KW=allison+changes

There is also a thread by Mike L talking about a possible problem getting shift kits to work with these changes:

http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4245&KW=allison+changes

Those two threads should give you a better idea of what's been changed.Edited by: Zeeb

Well that's good news and should relieve a lot of stress....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Can we then assume (I know that's dangerous) it's an LB7?
