: NEWBIE here, what programmer for my '06 LBZ Duramax?

Hello all, I'm new to this site and this is my very first diesel truck. I've had it a month now and just getting to know a little about it. Anyhow, there are 3 things that I've already decided on that I wanted to do to this truck. Exhaust, intake, and programmer. Those are the only things I have planned for this truck. I have the exhaust on order and I'm waiting on the intake to be released. So...what programmer do you recommend for me? I'm not looking to turn this into a race truck as I already have a drag car (see sig.), I'm not looking to turn this into a street racer or dyno queen. I simply would like to add some power without having to do any other upgrades, like the tranny for instance. I would also like to get better gas mileage. I'm averaging 16 mpg between city and highway. I would also like to have the capability of compensating for tire size. I plan on installing 285/75 over my 245/75. So with those factors in mind, what do you think is a good programmer for me? I know my truck is new, so there might not be much out if anything, but if there is, what do you suggest or should I sit back and wait for someone else to come out with one? I'm in no hurry. Thanks!

I would go with the Bully Dog Power Pup all the way. I have it and love it. Even bought an extra one for my old man, and he was impressed by the power from mine, and I never put it on lever 4 of 4.

What all does that particular programmer allow you to change? How many levels and what are they?

Change the Speed Limiter, Adjust for tire sizes, Read and Clear DTCs, and 4 levels of tune. 1 stock, 2 Tow/Economy generally a 40hp, 3 performance(I run) 69hp and 180(ish) lb tq and 4 extreme 200hp 400 lb tq. these are rear wheel improvements.

What are DTCs? Damn, those are sweet stages. That's a huge improvement for stage 4, but I would guess you run a risk of breaking something. Technically, there's 3 stages as stage one is stock, wouldn't you say?

yes, THe DTC are Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Stage 4 requires major tranny upgrades, and pyro gauges as well as a boost gauge. Stage 3 requests the gauges too. Its a great feeling to smoke little rice rockets at stop lights.

Do you have guages? If so, which ones/brand? Would I be risking anything if I put it on stage 3 just to try it out without any guages?

I am running on stage 3 and I do not have gauges. You have to watch the water temp, and most of all, be mindful of the tranny.

Now is this programmer the one I should consider buying without a doubt or wait for another company to release thier's? Again, this is my first diesel truck, so I don't know much about what's out there. What if I purchased a Bully Dog Power Pup and they improved it a couple months down the road? Would I be able to exchange it or retrieve the updates somehow?

The BD is internet upgradeable. This was my first Diesel, Bought it on Nov 19. And this tuner was on everyone of my friend's trucks. Ive had it on my truck for about a 3 weeks, and no problems!

I noticed that all the guys who responded have LLYs. The original poster and myself have LBZs. The only programmer that I am aware of for the LBZ is the Duramaximizer. What do you guys recommend?

So the only programmer out at this time for the '06 LBZ is the Bully Dog Power Pup, and its not internet upgradable? Also, it would be a good idea to wait for other programmers to come out? Is there any particular programmer company that I should wait for?

The Power Pup is internet upgradeable. Some of the guys have already updated - Bully Dog e-mailed them the new revision, they installed it and worked fine. It is on another thread, I will see if I can find it.

If you can wait a few months or possibly less, from what we have all been told you may also have PPE, TTS or Predator as options. On the module side, edge also has said that the are working on it but guaging by edge's prior release that will probably be summer realistically.

What about Banks? There are others out there, but I can't think of them off the top of my head, but should I wait, or is the current Bully Dog a good choice? I just don't want to have to do this twice, I wanna make sure I buy the right one. Bully Dog, Edge, and Banks are the ones that come up most often. Of course not all the companies out there have made a programmer for the '06 LBZ yet, but for the previous years/motors, who made the best one?

If you only want to buy something once, wait. It is going to take some time before the manufacturers get all the bugs worked out of their products. Since there are very few on the market, you will be waitng for a while.

Is there any particular brand of programmer that I should wait for? This is my first diesel, so I don't know what's out there or much about them.

I'm currently working with superchips on their LBZ tuner. They plan on releasing it in a month or so, so that option will be out there too.
