: "Tuneless" towing-Anyone doing it??
John3 01-14-2006, 07:51 AM Anyone out there tow without any added horsepower goodies? We tow a 10-11K fiver with ours and can't decide whether to hop it up or not. Have the Banks cat back and AFE induction. I purchased the Edge/additude, had it on for 100 miles and took it off. Motor made a strange rattling and various rpm's, made me nervous!!
Want to know how the handle the hills without the extra steam??
Thanks,
John
Groovilator 01-14-2006, 11:52 AM I pull a gooseneck dump trailer, sand and gravel for the golf course,14,000# no tune, '06 GMC CC with Duramax, no problems. The fuel mileage sure takes a dump though.
Stock for me is just fine. Although I can't wait to change the stock tires.
briank10 01-14-2006, 11:59 AM No tune on mine...................YET. Then again, going from a half ton gasser to a DMax, I'm still amazed with the power.
03 Radio Flyer 01-14-2006, 12:39 PM C5500 LB7/ZF/4.44 No tune. Pulls Southwest hills just fine at near Max. GVW, and 33K + lbs. gross towing doubles (fiver and wiggle wagon). Then again....I enter into different races than the "tuners"... Arrive at destination without scaring the s#*$ out of my crew and I win.

camping350 01-14-2006, 02:27 PM No major upgrades for me other than synthetic in everything my gesrbox unloaded is 9200 put 2 quads 69 baja food alot of beer firewood no problems sometime even full water tank 120 gallons
doubleduce 01-14-2006, 05:35 PM I have an '04 lly no mods and also pull a 10-11k 5er with no problems. Towed all over California, Arizona and Nevada pulls fine up hill, doesn't overheat either. If I was pulling 15k+ then I would think about mods.
haulin-rv 01-14-2006, 07:09 PM All stock, pulls great. Pulled anything from a 26ft travel trailer to 14,000 pound 5 er w/ no problem.
tabatasu 01-14-2006, 10:34 PM I have a 04.5 LLY. Tow a 11-12,000 pound 5er. I have had a Edgew/ *** and loved it. Towed the trailer to the dunes this last week and could not believe how much of a difference there was without the tuner. Put it back on last night before I go back.
The one thing for me is that my mileage increases with the tuner, and of more importance, when I need to get up and go, the tuner allows me to do that.
Won't travel long distances without it again.
NC Hauler 01-14-2006, 11:41 PM No mods on this one. I've towed the sig. 5er in the mountains of NC, SC, WV, TN and VA and so far no problems.
tmm2good 01-15-2006, 01:58 AM No mods on mine, I pull my toyhauler around the Colorado mountains just fine !
JJs DuMax 01-15-2006, 08:10 AM First off I'm glad to see guys out there towing with stock LLY's and not overheating in the mountainous areas. Most of you are most likely aware of the discussions on the LLY Engine Forum.
I purchased my truck to tow a 40' Sunnybrook toyhauler, GVWR 18k lbs, so I went with a dually. I pulled with this truck stock for several months before adding any mods, it pulled just fine. Biggest difference with a tuner is the power curve is better, you'll find you can hold 5th gear longer without downshifting, fuel economy is usually better as well. I hear more clatter without the tuner than with it, not sure what the difference is. I run the E/J.
Even if you don't run a tuner its not a bad idea to get some gauges to monitor EGT's, boost, etc. Safe trailering folks! JJ :)
John3 01-15-2006, 08:24 AM Guess I will get rid of the new edge/addiutde, (200 miles) and tow stock for a while. Anyone know what one should ask for the unit? Have a new probe and the short pillar additude mount as well.
Thanks for the info,
John

Edge is known for EXCELLENT customer service... If you ask them, it is highly probably they will let you send back your unit and give you a replacement unit, and then you could try it again (maybe there's something wrong with yours).
Last year I towed 14k on a round trip from IL to UT to CA to OR to WY and back to IL without a chip. The Duramax tows pretty good even without a chip. This year I got an Edge EZ, and just towed from IL to FL with the chip. Now I wish I would have had it on my last trip to CA, because I can already tell it would have made a BIG difference on those long hills and mountains. Needless to say, I won't be towing without a chip again. --Paul.
JoshDmax 01-15-2006, 04:42 PM Pure Stock here.
30' 5er bought 10k loaded.
bluenote 01-15-2006, 08:12 PM Our 5er weighs 10K empty, with a GVWR of just over 12K. My paltry 300/520 stock LB7 pulls it just fine.
bajadan24 01-15-2006, 10:10 PM 10k stock. Enough power for me.
RipVanWinkle 01-15-2006, 11:54 PM Our 5er weighs 10K empty, with a GVWR of just over 12K. My paltry 300/520 stock LB7 pulls it just fine.
Ditto.
Bottom line is that I tow infrequently so why should I spend the money on a tuner? If I towed every day, that'd be different.
Still, I would echo the comments of many here: My stock LB7 is a joy to drive with my 10k# camper. The only trouble I've ever had was leaving the antenna up and trying to go under a low overpass. A chip wouldn't have helped me then...
machnegative 01-16-2006, 12:54 AM I pull a Case 580 Super K backhoe on a regular basis with a stock lb7. Truck, trailer and hoe weighs in at 28,800 total. No problems here at 7500+ ft. elevation. Still has enough power to run 65 mph on the highway without flogging the hell out of it even at 110,000 miles.
053500cc 01-16-2006, 09:57 AM I pulled a 5000# travel trailer with mine, stock. Now I pull a 10K-11K 5ver, still stock, no tuners. Does great without a tuner. Pull in 6th most of the time even with the 5ver. I don't have any aftermarket gauges or anything, she's the same as when I drover her off the lot:) .
No tuner here either. I pull a 35.5 foot Jayco Bunkhouse, no problems yet. Going out to Yellowstone this summer. This will be the test. Haven't seen the temp. guage go much over the normal temp while running empty or towing. I did have a collapsed upper radiator hose a month ago with 5 degree weather. I brought it in to the dealer and they replaced the overflow reservoir cap, has been perfect since. Only mods are muffler replaced with an Aero Turbine straight thru, Air Lift and Isspro EGT gauge.
Kampzite 01-16-2006, 07:56 PM We have an '04.5 LLY and tow a 30' fifthwheel loaded @ 12,000 lbs. Go to Colorado from California every July, hardest pull on our route is "Wolf Creek Pass" between Pagosa Springs and Southfork Colorado, it is a 9 mile long 7% grade. I pull it at the speed limit and still have power to spare...without mods. Save your money for more useful toys (Like flyfishing gear or quiet "Honda" generators).
:grd:
Brennan monster 01-16-2006, 10:11 PM Completely stock here in the Colorado mtns., tow my 11k trvel trailer fine....when I'm big n' rich I'll look at some small upgrades...notin' crazy though
Terrain Twister 01-16-2006, 10:36 PM Pulled for about 6 months with no tuner and the truck did fine. But with the tuner, I just have to much fun!):h
