Just got the truck back from the dealer. Brought it in cause the power steering fluid was leaking. The said the whole steering box was wiped out. Is there a problem with the steering box on these trucks? Also was wondering if anyone else had this issue?

I guess there is never a dull moment is there. But mine was the actual steering box itself. 9000 miles and the box is wiped.

Mine went at 16000, replaced under warranty, they blamed it on my tires and lift, still covered it, I am a lil over 31K right now and I am not so sure it is isnt going out again no leaking yet but I am starting to get the same "play" that I had the first time. I guess I got a lil over 4K to figure it out, Good luck

What happens when we are out of warenty how much are these boxes going to run us? I wonder if there is an aftermarket box that would hold up better.

They replaced mine after 12k thinking that was the cause of the steering clunk.

I had an 03 and it started leaking at 10kmi. They replaced it. Now my 05 has 12kmi and its leaking as well. This is a perfect example why GM is suffering and I don't feel sorry for them! They put crappy parts into their trucks!!!

Mine has been leaking at the input for quite a while now. Will have to get it in soon. I was beginning to think I was all alone with this problem... Guess not!

That is exactly where mine was leaking. I thought they would just fix the leak. They told me the box was shot and put a new one in.

These steering system issues are common knowledge around all the "stealerships". I first had my issue with lack of power steering during braking at low speed ( in parking lots). After my sixth trip to the dealership.....and many excuses....Can't reproduce, tests to factory specs, and a bunch of other lame BS, I called the GM rep in OK city and he was pissed. They hadn't even attempted to make any adjustments to make me happy. Long story short, that was around 12K and they finally made it better by boosting the pump pressure in the steering box by 20psi. No problems until 5K ago, it started back up. So I'm in agreement with the above post. THey just use crappy parts and can't get it right the first time.-:t

a good way to fry your steering box is to go to the mud dirt sand parking lot or anywhere and do doughnuts untill you here a ugly screaching sound then it is fried and you also lose braking power due to the hydobooster running off of the steering box

:exactly: Talk about getting robbed!! That setup is the worst ever made. And they know it too!! Supposely it's been in engineering for 3 years to solve it. But guess what, they're still putting crap on our trucks. Go figure.
I guess crappy equipment means job security for GM.-:t
