: Prom for 94 Blazer?

I must be getting cheap in my old age here, does anyone have a HD prom for my 94 Blazer, mine is an S engine and i'm looking to convert it to an F so the wife will be able to stay a little closer to my bumper when i get the 00 back on the road. Guess i'm going to need another intake manifold also. You guys have any other suggestions as to what i'll need? If the prom doesn't pick it up a little at least i'll have a spare to get reprogrammed!

The eprom I got for my Burb is GM part #16244897. It cost me $94 from the stealer.

Dude,

I took smack - and rightfully so - from Turbo Doc for exactly the same idea. If you do go through with it, what I found digging around this site seems to indicate a 95 "F" prom is more appropriate than a 94. I found it at Rockauto

P/N 16212488 (ac DELCO) that Rockauto calls part # em2488 standard motor products 16212488 (computer) 97 plus 75 core.

What makes the 95 prom better than the 94?

We don't have emissions testing here........ :muahaha:

I think i'll need a different prom than that number you posted, mine isn't an HD, you have the 5068 pump, mines a 5521 i think. I'll need a prom probably from 95 3/4 or 1 ton that wasn't for the 5068 pump.

I"m still in dire need for another turbo too!!! Anyone have one to part with?

You can use the same manifold and just plug the EGR passageway with a freeze plug. Used to do it years ago, you can find a steel feeze plug at the auto parts that fits perfect but I forget what it fit. Just use alittle sealer and tap it in place. Just above the plug once installed use a center punch and tap the punch into the manifold. This keeps the plug from moving up and back out of the manifold.

GM# 16244788 is an updated EEPROM chip part # for my 95 SUBURBAN. Cost me $42US from GM wholesale, it lists for $67US. This is a 95 F engine with 4L80E and a 5521 pump chip part #. If you are after a 95 EEPROM then this is the one.

NOTE: GM calls the new style chips EEPOM's now, no longer PROM's.

Thanks Ferm... that sounds like the one that will do the trick.

On another note, this same chip increased my milage about 1.5-2 MPG. I know it sounds hard to believe, maybe my old chip was bad? But after installing it my milage went up. I did it to correct a code 87, the milage was an added bonus though.

I used #16244781. I do not know the difference from #16244788. Asked for 95 2500 with auto. Maybe sub as different part number. I was told you need a 95 prom to work with the 5521 pump. 5068 needs a 94 prom. 45mm freeze plug with work on a S lower intake. Some guy on ebay has really cheap HD intake gaskets. They have the block off plates on the crossover.

Major I wasn't slammin ya, just imparting some been there done that at ya, I upsized to a L65 PCM from L56, good upgrade for the money $75 from the bone yard; but after saving up for the reflash kicked myself in the pants for not going all the way sooner. If $35 will meet all your power demands by all means go for it; but here is the little secret if you don't have Jobe's will to resist, more power IS addictive and a little taste of it will leave you wanting more; ain't that rite fellow power junkies :D

TD,

For off roading use only, I could just get a L65 PCM and use it in my L56 Blazer, and do the same thing as changing the S Prom to a F Prom? I know I need to change the upper and lower intake to get the best performance. But this should help...Yes I'm to cheap to pay for the re-flash:D

It will net an improvement but if $$$ is a concern don't EVER get in a truck with a retune in it you will be hooked. S to F will give you stock fuel, boost, timing, shift of a F per the General's conservative mindset, & is wimpy up against a retune, you will need mechanical or fooled boost control, then boost without fuel isn't much bang for buck, better than what you have now, and so long as you don't ride in a tweaked up truck you will think you are doing good.

My truck has had two reflashes done by dealer. How do I tell if I have a current reflash or if there are newer ones.

I'm curious how the dealer flashed an OBD1? They have a replaceable PROM chip in them. The 96+ used the built in EEPROM that is reflashable.

I could not tell you. I only know that when I lift the hood there are two white stickers indicating a reflash. I will check dates on them and see exactly. Put the stickers clearly state a reflash.

Dealer flash or chip swap is probably an update to code or minor tweak to solve some "issues", GM would not have put in a performance profile matching anything the aftermarket tuning folks offer.

I do believe PROM stands for "Programmable Read Only Memory"

I suspect that the OBD 1 PROM is programmable, although no idea how this is done, but several suppliers sell enhanced performance PROMs, so there must be a way.

I also think (I know, too much of this may be dangerous) that when the early (5067?) pumps were recalled/replaced with updated pumps (5088, 5521, etc.) that either an updated PROM had to be installed, or perhaps the existing one flashed by the dealer to solve driveability issues.

This is all hearsay, more or less, so take for what it's worth, but some of the pump or programming experts may verify or shoot down this theory.

Typically a PROM can only be burned once. A EEprom can be reburned many times.

Unless you have access to a PROM eraser, it would have to sit in direct sunlight for 10+ straight years for the UV light to affect it's programming. PROMs are burned once and are replaced if the programming needs to be updated.

Checked with a dealer today on the above prom numbers, i think the quote here was $97.00 for that prom

Think i'll end up paying Westers more $$$$ and get some performance with it instead.... hopefully the wife will keep it on its wheels!):h
