Hi I've been reading this site for a while and apprecieate the info. I'm confused about a topic and would like opinions, clarification.

I have a 2002 duramax stock that I use on our farm. I have had problems with fuel filters clogging frequently. I haul alot of hay. Anyway, initially I thought the stock fuel filter was a 10 micron, so I was worried about smaller particles getting into the injectors and causing wear. I recently talked to the racor manufacter and AC delco reps who said the stock fuel filter is a 2 micron size. My fuel injector servicer here in oregon also has a duramax and he said the same thing that the duramax stock filter was 2 micron, and they had installed an after market 10 micron filter before the duramax stock filter to 'clean' out the larger particles and prolong the life of the small filter.

The above info seems to contradict with stuff I have read here and other sites. Any comments?

thanks walt

The micron rating of a filter is really useless without a beta ratio or some way to compare. A diesel wetted window screen will catch SOME 2 micron particles, therefore could be called a 2 micron filter....

I would also look for a better fuel supplier if you are plugging filters.

How many miles are they lasting? Edited by: Kennedy

The last filter lasted about 5000 miles. The reason I have had problems I think is because I switched to biodiesel in all my diesel tractor and trucks. The biodiesel dissolves prior diesel contaminates off the inside of the tank and they wind up in the filter. I just set up my stationary fuel tank with a 5 micron fuel filter (and a water filter) to filter pior to filling the equipment. I'm hoping this will help. The 5 micron filter is made by Baldwin.

what is a beta test? I assume that all filters have a range of filtration charateristics, but smaller would be better to a point. Does anyone disagree with the statement that the stock duramax fuel filter is 2 micron?

Wally, tests and samples have shown that the OEM fuel filter is *nominal* for 2 micron, but is actually only about 20% efficient for actually REMOVING particles in the 2 to 5 micron range (a beta test is a test for actual removal - particle count and sizes compared BEFORE and AFTER the filter and difference or "beta" number determined)
