: Extended Warranty???
moscow_silverado 01-06-2006, 02:48 AM When I purchased my pickup I turned down the extended warranty thinking that the 100,000 mile engine tranny warranty from factory would be good enough. Today in the mail I got an offer to buy a 6yr 125,000 warranty at the employee discount only for 72 hours. Tomorrow I will call and ask about prices for the warranty but in the meantime I would like some oppinions. Does anyone think that the extended warranty is worth the money it will cost?? I plan on putting 250,000 miles on it. (I hope) If you think it is worth is what would the cost be per month?? what would be considered too high?
Thanks for the input
cgibson 01-06-2006, 07:21 AM MS, Just bought my 1st diesel, but have been driving chevy since early
60ties, and only once have I been on the roadside. Water pump went out after only 1.5 yrs. Never had a major$$$ failure. Have 95 C1500 with 148K and only replaced brakes and tie rod on it. Chevies have been a Rock for me, but I do all my own maintenance and lost my hot-rodding ways early on. Was offered a "sweetheart" deal by the dealer for the Extended Warranty on the diesel provided I signed up at closing. I've still got time to opt for that Extended Warranty, but given my experience, I'll probably not get it on the diesel. Everyone, not dealer, that I've talked to has only good things to say about the Duramax/Allison & 2500HD. Wife thinks it's a good deal, so I'll probably have to live with that if something major$$$ happens. Sooo, what ever gives you peace of mind.
TC Dmax 01-06-2006, 07:44 AM I don't have an LLY however I found out the hard way when I purchased an extended warranty. Mine is the GM extended warranty but I didn't purchase it until 3 years after I bought the truck. It cost a lot more than what it would have if I had put it on my loan when I first purchased the truck.Couldn't justify the cost at the time of purchasing, but when all the injector talk started and before GM extended the warranty (injector) for earlier year vehicles, it made me wish I had of done it sooner. My opinion is with everything being computerised and the complexity of these vehicles it becomes a necessary option when purchasing a new vehicle or shortly there after.
I have used the extended warranty a few times anyway, brakes, block heater, coolant leak, and axle seals, so I'm not regretting the purchase. Only wish I'd done it sooner.
I'd say jump at it if the price is any better than what you would get without any incentive, it was worth it to me!!!

Thought I'd let you know...only the diesel engine is warranted for 100,000 miles. The Allison transmission comes under the standard 36,000 mile warranty.
aka108 01-06-2006, 09:43 AM Extended warranty programs reap hugh profits for GM or whoever else sells them. Received a notice from GM the other day on my truck. Cost around 1,900 dollars. Think I'll just run the gauntlet and hope for the best. Other GM trucks I've had never needed anything other than maintenance until traded. Best advice I can give is to do whatever makes you comfortable.
klutchdust 01-06-2006, 09:56 AM Popular consumer magazine reported that 72% of extended warranties are never used. !00% of the warranties that I ever purchased were never used. Me thinks it will cost around 1200 bucks or so, just a guess. i would put that money in a drawer and use as needed. The nay sayers will say" what about that first tranny job or what if the engine blows blah blah.." Personal choice but check and double check the FINE print, deductibles, and what is actually covered. If you think that every time it squeaks they are going to look at it you are wrong. Just my 2 cents. My wife says I don't know what I'm talking about half the time but you decide...lol..
I have found that regular, consistent, quality maintenance intervals are the BEST warranty.

cruznis300 01-06-2006, 12:50 PM Two things I like about the GMPP is that
1) The mileage/year coverage starts when you buy it. So if you are already 14,000 miles on the odo and get the 125k warranty, you will be covered till 139k (same goes for the years).
2) If you don't use it, you get your full money back!!

Shop around on the internet. The prices on the GMPP extended warranties vary just like the price of cars. Often times several hundred $$$ for the exact same warranty. Remember, you can get a warranty tailored to you. If you put very few miles on your truck, get one for more years and less miles. If you put alot on, get the one for a lot of miles and less years. Just make sure it is the GM warranty. Some dealers will tell you that it is and it really isn't. Just ask if it is GMPP.
It's a huge profit for GM because they pay the dealers very little for the work. They pay like it is warranty work (much lower labor rate) and they pay cost for the parts (they are GM). But if you compare it to what it would cost you for the repair and it is much diff. Honestly, I have never recommended an extended warranty to someone who didn't end up saving money. In Tx you will go through an AC system by 5 yrs or 100k (often times much less) and the cost of this is about what the warranty costs. Right there you usually recoup costs. Many times the AC job would be more.
thedong 01-06-2006, 05:52 PM from the prices yall are giving, buying up front is well worth it. I worked a deal to add 15$ a month to my payment on a 6 year loan. Do the math
$15 a month x 12 months/year x 6 years = $1080. And amortize that over 6 years and its really cheap.
Axehammer 01-07-2006, 09:06 AM All it is is an insurance policy, right? I hate insurance companies...
My wifes car broke on the side of the freeway once, had to have it towed...
The dealer had to replace the master fuse, which was not a normal fuse in the fuse box.
Because of the wording in the policy, fuses not covered, the extended warranty did not cover the repairs...
Never again...

I would caution everyone that like there are predatory mortgage lenders, there are predatory extended warranty sellers. I have recieved dozens of offers in the mail for my cars and trucks and not a single one was from GM. Always from phisers. I Censored hate phising and spam.
carhauler 02-12-2006, 05:47 PM If you buy your extended warr. before your factory warr. is about to run out you are giving GM time and miles , Buy it at 35900 miles or 35 months then you go to 95 months or 95900 miles , buy it from a GM dealer , shop it they all are different. Don't think about $15 a month in the contract , most will finance it at any time at 0%
