: Edge and mileage
Fredrick 01-05-2006, 10:21 PM Not that it really matters, but do you guys with edge get better mileage or are you like me and put your'e foot in it because you can. Just wondering? I think I'll get one just for fun. What do you have to do to the tranny to run on 4 or 5 ? And whats that cost?
crewzindmax 01-06-2006, 10:40 AM i picked up about 2-2.5 mpg in town. i took a long trip and averaged 22 mpg doing 80 on level 3
DuraBeast2 01-06-2006, 11:54 AM i picked up about 2-2.5 mpg in town. i took a long trip and averaged 22 mpg doing 80 on level 3
At 80 mph and 22 mpg, you must have coasted downhill with the engine shut off quite a lot!

WYOMAX 01-06-2006, 01:00 PM i picked up about 2-2.5 mpg in town. i took a long trip and averaged 22 mpg doing 80 on level 3
How did you get those numbersb?

crewzindmax 01-06-2006, 02:19 PM just lucky i guess. the trip was from Las Vegas Nv. to Davis Ok. and back. i left Vegas and didnt fill up till Gallup Nm. then again in Ok. City. sure, most of the trip is flat, but there is some good pulls between Hoover Dam and just after Flagstaff. i get around 17 in town.
DURYMCGEE 01-06-2006, 02:24 PM I run mine in the milage setting (1) and can turn about 17 in mixed highway, city driving unloaded. I wouldn't run in 4 or 5 too long with a stock tranny, it wont last real long. Running around in 3 is about right.
HBruns 01-07-2006, 12:32 PM The mileage as reported by the DIC will be higher when the Edge is turned up. I have noticed a false 2-3 MPG increase.
I have also recorded fairly consistent ~1 MPG greater MPG reports by the DIC when the Edge is disconnected.
I always rely on hand-calculated mileage numbers, not as reported by the DIC.

:)
Idle_Chatter 01-07-2006, 12:46 PM I run my Edge mostly in level 3. Occasionally when towing I will roll back to level 2 (yes, I don't tow very heavy). I didn't notice any real change in fuel mileage either way until I lowered the low boost fueling. Since I'm not a thrasher, I didn't mind the loss of low end power and have seen about a 1 to 1.5 mpg increase (even on winter fuel). Where my daily commute mileage was pretty much "locked in" at 16 to 17 mpg, I'm now seeing 18 mpg and "tickling" 19 mpg. Hoping to move that up at least 1 mpg when going back to summer blend fuel. Low boost fueling seems to give the most noticable increase in economy, and you don't even have to control the right foot!
ecc_33 01-07-2006, 05:25 PM i was getting around 23-24 miles to the gallon with edge on 3/3 with my blue truck
crewzindmax 01-07-2006, 07:30 PM my numbers were hand calced
WI Huck 01-07-2006, 08:31 PM Mileage is gained by keeping the RPM down. The best mileage is seen at 2000 or less. There is nothing you can do, besides changing gear ratios or tire sizes that will change your given RPM at a given speed. The variables are how much load is placed on the engine to maintain a given speed. As we have all witnessed, driving into a strong headwind or up hills will result in poorer mileage. That is where the extra power and torque comes in. If the engine can not keep up with the load, the transmission downshifts and the RPM goes up and the power is multiplied by the lower gear. The extra power from a tuner or module reduces the number of times the engine has to downshift and in turns keeps the RPM lower. This results in better mileage. In my truck this means keeping it at 70 which is fine for me and I don’t have to sweat the police. If you want to drive fast, don’t expect decent mileage. You want to run the highest power level you can while keeping the EGT’s in check. With all the different levels available on programmers and modules today the manufactures have to come up with names for them and call the lower power ones “economy” and the higher ones “performance”. The real aggressive levels are too touchy for smooth cruse control operation so find the one that you like best.
ssm58 01-07-2006, 09:06 PM mine seems to do well on level 5/1 for hiway cruise @ about 69-70 mph for long drives ,like WI. to detroit. about 19-21 mpg.drop back to level 3/1 for city.
66flh 01-07-2006, 11:47 PM With the 35's and edge on 3,I can pull 18-20mpg doing 65-70 on speedo.Edge says I'm doing 70-78mph.that on fairly level road,generally if I can behave myself,I average 16-18 mpg..
Spartus 01-16-2006, 09:05 PM New, I used to get 21-22mpg at 75-80mph on the tollway.:muahaha:
Had 2 injectors replaced at 22k, now I'm lucky 18mpg on highway.
ALL trips are hand calculated, and with the Edge at level 1, running 285 tires, and calculating an adjustment of 1.7 X the tripodometer reading.
The DIC on the truck seems to be consistantly optimistic by about 5%.
This is on FLAT LEVEL ground, not down a hill either.
wyattroa 01-17-2006, 11:12 AM man i would love to hit 20 miles to the gallon..i just had the edge on lvl1 and 100miles of the trip were highway the rest were city. i got 14.8 mpg...now thats just plain $hitty...

ecc_33 01-17-2006, 12:43 PM try the edge on 3/3 thats were i got my best mpg
dmaxtechreno1 01-19-2006, 12:36 AM best bet disconnect the edge and leave it disconnected all it does is add more fuel to increase power but engine longevity suffers are you guys watching your pyrometer? how hot is it getting? warranty wont cover engine failure due to a/m equipment. even with it diconnected and removed it is easy to tell if it was there. want more power buy an lbz add a second fuel filter and exhast and bingo reliabl safe and WARRANTY OK 675-700ftlbs.

Thanks for that wise and cautionary advice, Tech. I hope you never go out without a raincoat, never tear the tag off a pillow or mattress and never ever, ever salt any of your food, because the food manufacturer spiced that microwave meal when he made it and who are you to try and "modify" it?;)
The programming in the DMax is done very well by the factory, but to a "corporate standard" for a broad market and emissions with compromises at every turn. I am not a racer or sled puller. I drive very conservatively and have been greatly impressed with the overall improvement and driveability my Edge has added to my truck. I reserve the right to season my truck as I please as does everyone else. I also feel very strongly that my Edge IS NOT harming my truck in any way. And I'm sure you've heard of Magnuson-Moss? You may eat your peas and drive and maintain your truck any way you choose. So may we - and I think you're going to find that a heckuva lot more people here prefer a "spicier" dish than you recommend!
Oh, by the way, modifying the fuel system and exhaust on the LBZ will deny warranty in your claims - and don't dare change those tires either!!

You have never driven a tuned truck have you... My pyro has been hotter on a stock tune than I have seen with my edge, that is because I have the edge setup to back down, the factory settings don't monitor EGT'S therefore having no way to tell what is safe, in my mind the tradeoff is definately worth it.
